I think Misa is going to have to plunder someone else's closet. Not that you are wrong about her wardrobe, I'm sure that there's all sorts of magical stuff in there. However, she's facing that baggage limit thing. And I think she's chosen to use up the allowance on slivovice. So, Misa, where will you be, for how long, and who's hosting you? Pre-burn.

We are planning our inaugural year of the the Lingerie Lounge at our camp...we've been collecting lingerie, and I've been dyeing it and blinging it out. We're not a huge costume camp, but we would love to help you put together a fabulous outfit! Sexagon Camp at 430 and & Geranium.

does anyone have any experience/tips for sewing vinyl? So far what I've found is: use tissue paper so it doesn't stick to the machine, use a looser tension on the stitch.

Also I bought jersey ballpoint needles in 10/12/14 sizes. Any idea if these would be good to use? Thanks a million in advance!!

When I worked in a window shade factory the sewing machines were set up with standard point needles, size 14 iirc. The ballpoints are designed for knits and will likely do more damage to the vinyl than a sharp. tension would depend on how heavy the vinyl is.

We never needed tissue paper and basically sewed vinyl the same way we sewed any fabric. Since it can't be pinned without permanent damage the pieces to be sewn were positioned with 2 face tape.

11 may be good - depends on the weight of the vinyl. Window shade vinyl can be quite heavy - the better stuff is muli ply with fiberglass sandwiched in the middle so is probably heavier than what you are using.

Sounds like a very successful shopping trip. I think for night it's all about the coat. Mr. and I have coats that I doctored up with felt decorations and battery-powered lights. We ended up just wearing warm clothes (jeans, long sleeve shirts etc.) underneath. Unless you're going indoors-outdoors you probably don't need fancy under layers. And, if you are going indoors you can "strip" off the overcoat and have your zebras underneath! Chances are it'll be warm indoors, VERY WARM! ;-0

ARGH!!! A huge step backwards on my big costume project. What seemed to fit perfectly two days ago, now does not. Entire armature situation needs to be redesigned. I usually have a lucky day on Friday the 13th, sigh!

Make sure you're not trying it on backwards or upside down before taking it apart.

Yeah delle, a good point, always make sure you're not wearing the damn thing wrong! The problem was definitely structural and I was able to redesign it, so all good on the frame now. It did set me back though and now I need to alter the first two costumes to fit the new frame. But, after this weekend (ArtCar Fest in Reno) I'll be powering through on this project full time till blast-off! I'm shoot for 10 but will bring as many as I'm able to finish.

Oh...does anyone know when the Fashion Show usually is at Center Camp? I definitely want to do that again this year (and be more prepared!) Is it on the same day every year?

On alittle different note. I saw a lady buying a stack of old foam-backed placemats at the 2nd hand store. She saw placemats. I saw beautiful feathers cut from them with nice colors and designs already on them. (I knew there was a reason I hung onto those ugly things my kids used to eat on.)

My nighttime outfits are usually just my daytime outfits with leggings and long sleeve tshirts underneath. I actually only plan daytime outfits, the long sleeves and leggings and coats. Some years it is so warm at night that I don't need the leggings or long sleeve tshirts.

I went with the same thought last year and it failed me miserably. I am apparently evolved from people who never set foot in anything colder than 80 degrees Fahrenheit during their entire lifespan. Was literally freezing every time I went anywhere in the open playa without 3 layers + 1 heavy coat. The second night was so terrible I even considered just staying at camp the rest of the week.
But alas I didn't want to be that person so I sucked it up...added more layers and wrapped the bottom of my coat around my legs so I could at least sort of comfortably pedal my bike around. I'm trying to have more/better leggings this year and adding a flannel lining to my coat and hoping this helps.

Depending on how cold it is I have layered leggings on more than one occasion. I even do that just going out dancing on normal nights in the winter and have earned the nick name Two Pants from a friend. Sometimes I even wear 3 pairs of pants. Also, layering fishnets or patterned tights can help some with the cold as well as adding more visual interest to an outfit. And since fishnets or other patterned tights are small, they are easy to add to a pack, usually. I have also made/collected about 7 different playa coats of various lengths and weights. Since I am lucky enough to not fly in, bringing all or most of them adds variety and comfort since I can go, "damn it's cold" and get the longest, warmest one if need be.

aahhh just finished the hem on my sons big furry coat. What a bitch this coat was. Turns out i made the lining just a tad to small so I had to add a triangle shaped piece lining. After sewing 2 spirit hoods, 1 big coat and 1 big furry sexy time blanket I am done with fur for the year

the blanket is communal and not really sexy time, I just call it that.

I've got a question on fabrics. I bought a great long wool pea coat at Goodwill. To make it a little more Playa worthy I was going to add triangular panels of a brocade fabric along the skirt of it. Does anyone know how the sewing of those 2 fabrics would work together?

I've got a question on fabrics. I bought a great long wool pea coat at Goodwill. To make it a little more Playa worthy I was going to add triangular panels of a brocade fabric along the skirt of it. Does anyone know how the sewing of those 2 fabrics would work together?

Depending on the thickness of your coat (several thicknesses already I presume?), and the qualities of your sewing machine, you may find you'll have less frustration just doing it by hand.

Just be DAMN sure to fold over and finish the brocade so it doesn't frazzleup and moop all over the place.


I find that machine sewing on "edging" is an easy way to contain potential mess and create a clean and THIN edge to then (hand) sew (if necessary) on to the garment. The edging is cheap (dollar store, even, if you're lucky) -- and the different colours can be a bonus.
