Art Installation Seeks Theremin Virtuoso

Postby monte » Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:16 am

Dear 2012 Burners,

We are currently seeking theremin players for our "Playing with Fire" art installation. “Playing with Fire” is an interactive musical fire installation that combines the classic physics experiment of the Rueben’s Tube with the unique electronic instrument know as the Theremin. Participants will be able to manipulate sound and fire by moving their hands within an electrical field. Playing with Fire defies the characteristic expectations of sound and fire, and provides participants with a transformative experience of the two. While all participants are invited to "play with fire", we'd really love to find some folds who actually know how to play the theremin (musically). We'll be running the project most nights from sundown until midnight and whenever else we feel like it. Our camp is called Heros and SuperVillians and we'll be located within PEX Village @ 8:30 & A (could possibly change). Please contact me directly at theinsidetrack@mac.com if you can rock a theremin!

Here is a video of a prototype of our project hooked up to an ipod:

Here is a video of a work in progress of our final version hooked up to a theremin with an explanation of how it works:

And here is an artist rendition of what the final project looks like:

Oh, I don't know it was the playing per se, it was just a piece of cheese. I think it was originally recorded in the 60s (I could be completely wrong here, because I can't imagine that anyone would want to put this on cd 30 years after it was on vinyl) and it has the qualities of some sort of swinging bachelor (who doesn't like rock music) of the times in the music selection and instrumentation. Believe me, a dieing cat has some sort of integrity compared to this.

Camp Heros and Supervillians? Do you know if this is going to be at your camp or out on the esplanade?

How do you find a theremin virtuoso? Do they have a union or grow on trees or something?

UPDATE: PEX village has been moved and is no longer at 8:30 and Esplanade. PEX new location is between 8:00 & 8:30 from E to G. We'll be located somewhere within that chunk of land. Just ask for Monte at Heros and Supervillians.
