For me it does a couple of things, first having pre-drilled the screw holes at home, I know exactly which joint goes and where it should be. Plus I think it adds a little security to the hut, since the joints won't be able to move and pop off (especially the cross ribs)
Is it really necessary? IDK. but for the five minutes it takes, I think its worth it.
