Feedbooks.com has many, many wonderful and free eBooks to offer, lots of which are by new and promising authors.
Smashwords.com has lotsa freebies as well, many are not free but I believe most of the price goes to the authors.
Baen books (a major fiction / fantasy / sci-fi publisher) has an immense free library that offers an incredible variety of known authors who have released major titles to the citizens of the interwebs.
Corey Doctorow believes in freedom of literature and offers ALL of his works for free at Craphound.com.
Before I had a Kindle I never thought I'd be able to do without tangible physical paper books. I haven't bought a paper book (except for locksmithing, gunsmithing, and electronics reference tomes) since...
