I've wanted to attend Burning Man for about 4 or 5 years, but as a school teacher, not showing up to work the first week of the year simply isn't an option. FINALLY they slated school to start the week after Labor Day. The DAY I hear the board would be voting on an after-Labor-Day schedule, we started looking for a used RV.
It was kismet that we were lucky enough to get tickets, since this may be our only chance to go. That post Labor Day startup only happens every 6-7 years.
Now it's a 22 foot project sitting in the driveway, and we are gathering costumes.
Currently we are dealing with what to do about so many of our burner friends not getting tickets, and whether we should join a camp. Camping is much easier as part of a team!
We are SO looking forward to our first burn!

An RV gives you a lot of infrastructure, so joining a camp will be particularly optional for you, even as first timers. Theme camps usually involve work & a fee, but you're helping to give the city an experience, which is gratifying, and there's also some prestige/fun/built-in social structure and some benefits (meals or showers or extra shade, depending). Then there are camps or villages that are no-fee & largely social (often with a shared central shade). Finally, there's going "on your own" or with friends, meaning your time is completely your own, & you can do & give what you want, & give yourself a name for the hell of it--or don't.

I believe that no schools should start the school year before Labor Day. I bet school management would like to schedule Labor Day as a school day.

What up SoCal, so glad to hear you got off of school! We have several teacher friends who have been DYING to come to the burn with us and unable to swing it with it being the first week of school. You picked a wild year, but from the sounds of it you are going to jump right in and make it happen.

I have many friends who are schoolteachers. Some have been able to go, some haven't. I wouldn't mind teaching once I graduate. I can't believe that BM is part of my decision process on whether I want to pursue a teaching career.
