It is a frustrating situation to be in but I am with everyone else. Pay for the tickets. Do whatever it takes to get the money and go.
Although it wouldn't be a bad idea to talk to your friend and explain the frustration. This may be something that could build resentment and hurt a friendship if you don't talk it out.

Have your friend pm me please. I live about 45min. away from you and will be there with the quickness(46min.) with cash in hand, as I do need two tickets. It's going to be a terrible year out there, If I were you I would wait it out til next year. It'll be better than this year.

I think you made the good decision in buying the tickets. Maybe you can ask to split the payback into several payments..?
Once it's done, you don't forget to tell her/him that it was not cool to ask for money afterwards... She will think about it, maybe apologize or try to find a compromise, and you might stay friends too !
