Also, that speech is beautiful. Kudos to Chaplin for writing and delivering it. Just went and read a plot summary of the movie for context -- I knew it was a parody about Hitler, but nothing else. It sounds like this speech takes the movie beyond a simple mockery of into actually offering something beautiful and positive as an alternative. Even today, that speech sounds downright... modern.

Agreed; it's amazing. The speech made me cry the first time I heard it. It's better in the context of seeing the whole film, though . . . because he draws the viewer in with what he's most famous for, and then knocks you on your ass with that speech. It must have been even more mind-blowing in 1940.

A high school teacher got me started on Chaplin, although I didn't see The Great Dictator until I was an adult. It's one of my favorite movies.
