Very astute, Sage! Often when someone asks a question instead of simply coming right out and making a statement, they have an agenda in there somewhere. I wondered how long it would take for someone to be skeptical about my motives. And while I applaud skepticism, cynicism isn't necessary. My motives were to illicit some comments regarding the attitudes, participation and contribution of burners who "yearned" to get dusty and struggled to get there, compared with those who simply "came along for the ride" because it was convenient and they were offered a ticket. I have heard speculations that there is a concentration of tickets in the hands of burners who over-registered to hedge their bets by having friends and family buy extra tickets. Consequently, some of these extra tickets will not be returned to STEP, but will be offered to casual acquaintances who were not really motivated to attend the event in the first place, but will now go along to see what all the hype is about. I am curious how we, the community, think this might affect the burn. But the despicable ogre of scalping raises it's ugly head in this case, making a simple comparison impossible. Just because someone paid a scalper more money for a ticket does not mean they are more motivated and dedicated, just as getting a ticket the easy way does not imply low motivation or lack of participation.
So maybe my question is whether we value one type of burner more than another, and I don't really want to go there. Same question with options 3 and 4; is a camp crew member more important than anyone else? Is an artist more deserving of a ticket than anyone else?
And I do have an agenda, as well as my own ticket. I just need another ticket for a crew member, so I asked this friend who has tickets but isn't going...

I think those questions are personal, subjective questions. That is the answer will vary from person to person depending on their own subjective values and priorities. While I might think an artist or designer would be higher priority than a crew member, you might think covering your crew would be top priority (or you may not care for the artist/designer in question's work). In my mind, crew is staff or setup team and someone else on the team could fill in if necessary, where an artist or designer is doing something unique/original/not easily replaced. But just being an artist doesn't really make somebody better or more deserving (in my opinion), it would be a matter of what their participation is (either to the city or the project). It all becomes subjective at that point - your friend can't help everyone, so who so does he/she help? The person bringing sno-cones to the playa, or the person making root beer floats, or the welder working on a 20 foot sculpture of a flower, or the carpenter building a 30 foot tall duck?

Technically reporting him to tix police/canceled tickets = putting more tickets into STEP.

You don't know if you'll steal food until you're hungry. I put in to buy a ticket in the pre-sale. I was awarded a ticket. (Not knowing if I would get one). I more or less FORCED my husband to register for the lottery. He didn't win. but if he had.....and if the tickets weren't registered in his name......I would have MADE him buy them and sell them to my ticket-less burner friends. I couldn't, wouldn't, shouldn't scalp. (Repeating that to myself in a chant). Did anyone in the pre-sale NOT get a ticket?

P.S. Yes it is happy hour. Why do you ask?

I believe all the ePlayans who registered for the pre-sale got a ticket, and not very many, proportionately speaking--in the Burner population, overall--were shut out, because most decided to wait for the Main Sale.

If he wants accolades for "doing the right thing (face value, regardless of where or to whom)", he can even post here, and we'll pat him on the back.
He'd be an inspiration, to others, to "do the right thing".

Simply saying "So and So" is going to scalp their tickets is going to get a ticket order cancelled. I hope BM requires some proof and evidence.

good point!
I'd imagine, there is proof needed, like an ad or correspondence. I can't imagine the org. would cancel anyone just on an email.

but, heck, I could see a "hall of fame" thread, for good folks, who sell their tickets at face value, or send them to STEP. A way to give thanks and positive reinforcement to "doing it right".

Its definitely a slippery slope. If an event host cancels a ticket sale because you want to resell them at a profit, which is legal in Nevada it could be construed as restraint of trade. The third party sues BM for damages - probably wouldnt win, but it costs money to defend nonetheless. Who knows.

I think in that movie's case, it's the accent, the names, the rube goldberg drawings, the gang of anti-Mitsubishi...
