Is public sex allowed on the playa as part of the event/performance? How common would you say it is to view it?

Well sure but you have to bring the weed for everyone to sit around openly smoking. Don't mind the Ranger standing over there. He's only there to make sure no one breaks into the event.

to find open sex areas, turn left immediately past greeters, follow the orange fence (staying to the right, or inside said fence) until you come to a group of trailers and such. Ask there.
don't be surprised by the croud, they also give free coffee and doughnuts.

Now that it's page two, I'll give the non-snark answer.

Whatever else burningman is, it's also subject to county, state and federal laws. This includes laws concerning open displays of sexuality. Sadly, in practice, citations are far more likely to be given to queer rather than straight expressions.

If you have an artistic performance where it is required for two people to fornicate, perhaps it would be a safe alternative to seek abstract, or metaphorical ways of displaying this... such as two people having a very sexual wrestling match... or a guy with a super soaker filled with milk (sperm) shooting a girl in some sort of round costume (egg.)

A campmate of mine was working gate in 2010. He told a bout a couple they saw on one night night about 100 feet off of gate road. He walked by and shined one of those high power spotlights on them. They froze and then the guy....wilted and it was done!

My virgin year on Sunday afternoon a group of us went to get some ice cream from a camp a few blocks down. We got there and they were already out of it - all gone. On our way back to camp we saw a couple laying in the middle of E street - between 9 and 9:30. She was on her back and he was munching away. She writhed and screamed - and they were done. They then got up and walked together for about 20 feet then split into different directions. I always wondered how that conversation got started!!
