I am in favor of removing radical-inclusion under ONE condition... ..a board of exclusion is created and I am its chairperson.

i read once that the best way to tell what a politician stands for is to ask them the Three (3) things they would do if they were a dictator..

so, in no particular order (because if i was a dictator theyd be excluded anyways)

EXCLUDE:

people who would sign up for shifts and be able to rationalize not showing up (without showing up to say they arent gonna do it)

people who sign up for shifts and are too drunk/fucked up to carry them out/walk straight when they do show up

people who seem to want to kill themselves at burning man by ingesting cases worth of robotussen and booze...putting an enormous strain on the rangers/medical/campmates

If you want to limit the number of people that are coming to the event simply eliminate RV's altogether. A lot of people will then simply chose to stay home.

I don't feel excluded for not having a ticket yet.

But, there were some posts not related to the ticket fiasco revealing some stimuli for the 10 Principles that were more pragmatic than idealistic. Like Decommodification. Someone mentioned how BLM wasn't going to allow a big free for all marketplace on Federal Land and so was born "Decommodification". In that context, it's less about realizing some post-materialist societal imperative and simply establishing a norm that allows the event to take place.

I always read Radical Inclusion as a way to remind participants to not be dicks to people that they might not otherwise hang around.

Anyway, I am warming to the idea that I might not attend in 2012. I'm staying the course and will avail myself of every option remaining ... outside of scalpers. Is there a little hesitation/contemplation about being a virgin in BRC with the current state of affairs? To a certain extent, I think so. Do I care what people think? Hell no! So in the spirit of Radical Inclusion, don't be dicks to virgins in 2012 and Radical Inclusion is in effect! haha

The idea of decommodification was purposeful not a consequence of Federal burecracy. Larry Harvey has said many times over the years in talks and interviews, etc. that the idea was for people to be able to interact without the typical commercial buyer/seller relationship and he hoped this would lead to more meaningful interactions between people....

Try looking for food vending on blm land. I only found one place, in Imperial County, I think, that had it and you had to take your cart/trailor off of public land once every five days for cleaning. So it's very different from, say, Curry Village in Yosemite.

@oneeyeddick - You can split hairs on radical inclusion all day long if you like, some argue that it was out the minute they started charging for tickets. Or for that matter, holding the event in the middle of nowhere. In a world of scarcity, I read radical inclusion as being everyone has a chance to get a ticket and participate.

@Lord Of Ruin - I agree, and I'd like to see a high percentage of new burners too. I've only been participating since 2004, so I missed all the years where the event had doubled in size and 50% of the people in BRC had never been to Burning Man before. By all accounts, the event did not suck before 1997 ('96 was the last year it doubled).

@dragonpilot - you may actually be the very first person who's suggested an excluding a group of people that would also exclude them from participating. Selfless and refreshing, and it would certainly be an interesting experiment, but I'm glad we all have a chance to go.

Radical inclusion my ass. Most of the proposed "solutions" to the fiasco by long time burners include some method of awarding tix to theme camps, long time burners, artists, etc.

Everyone seems to have the attitude that they earned the right to be there, and that poor noobs certainly won't make for a good Burning Man all by their lonesome. If part of the grand experiment is to see just how temporary the temporary community will be, I say let it all play out. I'd love to see what an event would look like with ~40% completely new burners.

Theme camps ARE Burning Man. They deserve to be there more then virgins do because they DO more to make the event what it is.
