Technically they are exactly the same as wasps- "hornet" is generally used to refer to eusocial wasps (wasps that form colonies), and "yellowjacket" is another branch of the social wasps.

A "wasp" is any member of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that isn't a bee or an ant.
