Take my son to Yellowstone. He was there when he was just a few weeks old. He doesn't remember it of course. We'd take the Toyota motorhome.

You do realize Yellowstone campgrounds "sell out" and reservations that week are hard to come by? Very crowded, long lines.

There's always wonderful Southern Utah, we have five national parks and state parks that are mind blowing. Valley of the Gods, anyone? Lots of wide open BLM land for camping ....

JuPlaya is already on the BLM radar. I have seen and held a piece of MOOP at a ROM I tagged along to, an internal BLM memo discussing Juplaya and future potential enforcement. This was several years ago, it hasn't happened yet, but it could.

You can shoot guns on BLM land in Utah, oh yes. Fire would be tricky, the place is a tinderbox in summer.

This is true!
At first I was totally on board with the Yellow Stone plan, but this is a really good point!
We are hoping to make a Yellow Stone trip sometime next summer, and it would have been awesome to do it with burners.
But, Utah is beautiful too!!!
In the mean time, lets keep planning for the MnG, I believe we'll all get tickets one way or another.

Yea, I hear ya' Fishy, the board sure has been blown to bits since the lottery thing.

I would head to the Channel Islands, in Ventura. Those Islands are an amazing example of what California was like before the white man arrived, land and sea.

I used to live down in Ventura County...One time we took the day trip boat out there and the Captain announced it was the best day of the year and he suggested anyone with the will and drive jump in the water (usually day trips just involve walking on the island) A bunch of us jumped in half clothed (women in bras and panties, lol) and we all shared one or two dive masks...we saw amazing marine life, colorful star fish, shcools of colorful fish, seals, a shark, manta rays, sunlight beamming down through the kelp forests in the blue blue waters...it was during plankton season, the feeding frenzy atracted all the marine life. We stayed in the water for hours!

When we finally got out to dry off, we climbed the stairs to the top of the Island, Anna Cappa (sp) and saw the Manta Rays swimming through the kelp channels, amazing sight to see. Everything except whales were there that day. What luck hitting that day was...

Also, a beach burn would be maybe do-able...or go to an L.A. regional thing, Ventura is close enough to L.A....who knows...

I've always wanted to See Bryce Canyon and those surrounding parks (in daylight, drove 'em once at night, haha) AntiM made a good suggestion...but I've got family down in So. Calif., so we'll leave that one for Illy and others coming from that direction.

I'm doing a drive out to SLC then Aspen in late January. How are the national parks in utah that time of year? Are you able to see much if it's freezing/snowing? Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, and Arches are on our list of places to stop/stay overnight.

On topic:
If I can't get a ticket, I'll probably go camping out in the desert, and do crazy stuff they don't allow at burning man.

Just 2 hours north of Yellowstone is Glacier, which I find to be much more spectacular and not so crowded.
