Yup, a few of those placed on the playa would certainly have some sort of impact--if only just as entertainment. On the other thread there were many devilishly entertaining ideas along the same line; I think many of the posters were even warned by a mod not to suggest doing anything that could get someone hurt or killed! Hey, but if they steal/borrow a bike that isn't theirs, wouldn't they bear the responsibility for any injuries they got on that bike? (Well maybe not in this litigious society of ours.)

I believe that the back of their ticket will cover that "You May Die!". Besides, one could claim that they were just using a really long lock cable

This year I had another one stolen even though I had locked it religiously for ever moment accept the five minutes I spent on a trampoline. Some bold piece of trash stole from me while while I was right there!

5 minutes is more than enough time to steal a bike. Sorry that it was stolen, but...shoulda locked it up.

Now when people steal LOCKED bikes...that is just sad.

The math makes perfect sense. A minority of moochers get tired of walking, spot a bike near the potties, think "the playa provides" and ride to their destination sound camp, then dump the bike. The majority leaves dumped bike alone, because it clearly belongs to somebody, unfortunately that somebody has no idea where to find it. Even if you suspected it was lost, the owner may have intentionally left it there and trying to move it might make them assume it was stolen. Repeat every time the moocher wants a ride over several days and multiply by the number of moochers and the result is a massive pile of lost bikes after the burn.

That was one of the first discussions I read when I came on here. I about died laughing. Bendy bike, super slow bike, self stopping bike, depedaling bike. . .

If you get bored I have an idea for one of the rodeo bikes. Relace both wheels so the hubs are off center. Might need to drop a rim size, 26" down to 24" so they'll clear at maximum eccentric. If you can get 3" of travel it ought to hobby horse rather well. Crank might smack the ground and rim brakes certainly won't work. It's an interesting thought but making custom spokes and relacing wheels is a pain.
