Such an irony that the OP would call upon people participating in an arts festival that is practically an altar of consumerism to join up in this hippie-esque protest against day-traders. About the only thing I'd protest for is against potential suppression of freedom of speech, but I'm not sure if this level of disruption really qualifies.

It kind of is like a theme, except more general to be as inclusive as possible. Each gathering in whatever city can define what issues they have with the way things are and the direction they are going.

In most places it seems people are getting fed up with the way corporate greed and control of our supposed democratic government has become more blatant about shifting the wealth of the common working man into their own accounts. So campaign finance reform is an issue. As is the corporate backed anti-unionism, Cuts in education spending because a dumber America is easier to manipulate and people with a mountain of debt from school have to be good toadies or loss everything.

It’s about the banks getting the deregulation they lobbied for so their runaway greed could cripple the economy, then in an attempt to avoid a worldwide economic collapse receiving bail out money, and no interest loans that they use to provide those responsible with big bonuses.

It’s about stopping the commodification of people and the desire to put the welfare of people and the planet over profits. Our relentless move towards a two class society the 1% rich and the 99% rest of use toiling in servitude is a big one for a lot of folks.

It’s about people realizing that uncontrolled capitalism might be raising the tide for a few but the rest of us are in sinking boats. And so much more, Yes there are some hippie-esque tree huggers and animal rights people involved as well as labor unions, veterans for peace, first responders, teachers, healthcare workers, and people who just care about their fellow Americans and are tired of seeing them taken advantage of.

In a way it’s like Burning Man, The people make the event, Occupy everywhere is about reasserting the knowledge that America can be a great place because it’s the people that make the country, and we the 99% want to be able to enjoy the party not just be server at it.

I've been playing with the idea of going down and checking it out and maybe joining in but it sounds like a mish mash of issues and I'm not sure it's demonstrating anything but how to make a nuisance of oneself without a clearly defined agenda (although I'm quite adept at that... or so I've been told).

I'm also reluctant to have potentially 4 NYC cops put in the awkward position of having to bust their uncle/god father.

I think at times what hurts "the cause" is a certain number of folks, within said crowd, who just want to "stir it up", become confrontational and create the "scene"......which then escalates.

I was looking for that exact thing. I am usually the first in line to look at the crowd before LEO response because there is a tendency to blame authority without accepting responsibility.. I didnt see it here. To have a LEO walk up, unholster pepper spray, let loose and then simply walk away id very disturbing and is indicative of "police action" moreso than "police response"

I admit that it was very awkwardly done, and that the op had huge expectations about our politics and interest. And had no idea that most of use get Da Mulish when expected to go in a particular direction, but Zule and Simon can count me as another supporter.
One thing that the burn can be about for me is a move to make life more conscious, more deliberate. And the protest opens that up as a larger possibility for me in the wider world.

The manifesto they finally released includes everything but the kitchen sink. They are trying too hard to appease every perceived oppressed group whether real or imagined. They need to keep it focused more to the grievances of the middle class by emphasizing the effects of corporate and wall street greed and how this is effecting their standard of living and the well being of their families.

yes, I did. with great interest, in fact.
I totally agree, the appearance of "police action", is very real.
I guess, experience has shown (to me), that in any large scale protest like that, that my statement holds true.
I'm not saying much of what was filmed is not blatant brutality.
I'd also submit, much is not filmed,and, may make a difference.
I just don't see things like that as "clear cut".
I've been on both sides of those circumstances. I've seen asshats on both sides, too.

Mostly, it points out the incivility we are progressing towards, as a society.
No real care for our "fellows" unless they are part of our "group".

A cop is hit with a rock, or bottle, or something, for standing protecting some store front or whatever, during a protest. they have done nothing, to anyone.

A protester, is maced, and beaten, for voicing their opinion, cussing and pointing their middle finger. They have done nothing, to anyone.

both are in uniform, and identified by the others, as such.
Both, are judged, by said uniform, and actions taken, based thereon.

*uniform can be cops suits, helmets and shields, or tye dye, dreads, and patchouli, for this example*
