Soul, Funk, Disco Camps at Burning Man?

Hi all,

Coming to BM for the first time from Ireland this year and I was wondering if anyone know's of many soul/funk/disco themed/style camps that are on offer this year?

Myself and a friend of mine run a night called Amen Brother here in Dublin which specialises in all things soul, funk and disco with a pyschadelic twist and we'd love to know if there's much of a representation of this kind of music at BM?

Stag Camp plays a LOT of funk music. It's the DJ's favorite thing, new and old funk, and I think he likes international stuff too. Stag isn't a large sound camp or rave; more like a village of 100 self-reliant types camping "stag" but with a little social togetherness.

A band called Silvermouse is scheduled to play at Stag on Thursday night of the event (I don't know how funky there are . . . they sounded like a fusion of styles).

GravyBrain plays funk and fusion and has been on the playa for 3 years running. This year they will play in Center Camp on Tuesday night 12:15-1:15am (technically Wednesday morning). They also will be playing DOTA on Wednesday evening. Other possible shows include playing on the pink elephant mutant vehicle, Beau Le'Phant.

Another great venue for funk is Transmorphagon. They are usually on the Esplanade down around 3 o'clock.

We are not exactly funk/disco/soul, but we are classic hip hop in theme. So you'll at least be able to hear some funky baselines and samples with us. I know it isn't the same, but we are all about hip hop history, and funk/disco/soul were a big part of that! So, I hope you'll at least come by and check us out.

God, I know I am getting old, but.... funk? I heard of the "Funky Monkey" otherwise the word is allmost fuck, but with an N instead of a C.. humm, "wannn funk?" Humm, interesting, did that get a rise out of anyone? Sorry to be stupid and lame and so out of touch, but I thought disco died in 1986 at some dance place in Hollywood where 5000 dancers would all do choreographed dancing. (see I can remember something)

A few other Funky Tings...

WEDNESDAY EVENING APRES-SKI at TIME OF YOUR LIFE CAMP - Always one of my fave parties on the Playa. Thrown by Whistler freaks in a cozy, well-adorned dome, Apres is always silly fun and usually propeled by funk. Last year's lineup included Vinyl Ritchie, Ali B, Ace, and Fort Knox 5. Check for exact location but TOYL is usually around 3 and D or thereabouts. And this party is ALWAYS a blast. Usually folks come dressed in ski suits. yup... its like that.

THURSDAY NIGHT on the JANKY BARGE - We have been doing a funk themed ride on Thursday on the Janky Barge for the past 3 years and will continue this year. Janky residents include Motion Potion (founder of SF Funk Festival), U9lift, Phleck (from Motown Mondays) and Honey Knuckles from Sanguine Soul Radio. Last year's guests were Fort Knox 5, Ali B, Bitchin, the Skritch etc.. This year should be somewhat similar. We are sorting the exact lineup shortly. Check www.facebook.com/thejankybarge for the location and lineup... or keep eyes open for the Barge. We will be easier to spot with upgraded lighting this year.

DISCO KNIGHTS: Green Gorilla camp is now "Disco Knights" and plays a lot of disco/boogie and funky house. Anthony Mansfield and M3 are among the residents so you know it will be tight. They do their big funk night on Wednesday.

45's JAM???? Also - last year we actually hosted a legit Funky 45's jam at Nexus on Friday afternoon. I'm not sure if this is happening this year but we're trying to make it happen. None other than Ace and Vinyl Ritchie (Canada), Alex Ferguson and Shakey (Brooklyn) and Smallchange (NYC) brought 7's.... News on this will be posted at facebook.com/moposf

T'Gon has the best stage we've played on in our three years of gigging out there! Funk with a great view of the inner playa! We'll be stopping by, who knows, once there maybe we can bring the elephant over for a jam!!!

Get ready to fall in love with sounds you never thought you would like before! With that said, I too love a good ground out with some funk.

To the poster above, Funk doesnt have to be Retro or old school. There are plenty of great new funk ensembles and sounds. If you arent into that music then you would think funk meant retro but really it is constantly evolving.

With that said, I always do my best to look for MARCH FOURTH MARCHING BAND from Portland Or. on the playa. a REAL gazillion piece band with horns and guitars shredding and all that epic shit!!! They are such a treat. I dont know where they will be or whats going on, I havent scouted yet but you will run into some great bands like this out there in the dust. It isnt all wub womp untz oontz!

Come by Cirque Du Cliche at 4:30 and Birthday, we have a live music dome and lots of new and old school funk lovers at that camp. Mojo Green from Reno should be playing too, also check out Hair of the Dog camp which vibes on similar.
