Camp Ovens

Ive searched high and low, cheap and expensive, but can't quite decide which camp oven is best. I want to cook a roast, whilst on the playa, but can't really tell which oven would fit a roast. Pictures only tell 999 words. Any experienced camper chefs out there?

you can get one of those infrared turkey fryers. they work with propane & do roasts, & chickens etc.

Looks just like the one I got at Costco for $150. It works very well, I baked cookies and gave them to my village.

I bought a $50 natural gas kitchen stove off of CL. Looked up instructions on the internet as how to convert the stove to propane. It was fairly simple and nearly every natural gas stove can be converted to propane. I bought a pre-made regulator and flexible hose for a propane heater and plumed it in to the gas hook up on the stove using special gas teflon paste.

The oven worked fine.

I have to say that Doc Pyro has got to be the board expert on playa ovens.

you can get all sorts of liquid propane gas ovens, all the way up to ones thatd fit your home nicely...


but...

ive done lotsa cooking out on the playa, without an oven,... if it was mE trying to get a roast cooked on the playa i would probably just go with an electronic croc-pot/slow cooker..... uses up loads of electricity but it can cook some good stuff, and is pretty well sealed from playadust

plus they are probably at most $50..


an option if youve got power.

It is. AntiM got one (actually, I believe it was myLarry) at Costco too about a year or so ago. I couldn't decide if we really needed it. Costco doesn't sell them any longer, so when it came on sale on that website, we finally decided to buy one. (almost as cheap as Costco, and free shipping) It will make it's first trip to the playa this coming year.

We also bought the CampChef stove from Costco and all the extras from the site...we took it to the playa last year and man, did I have fun cooking!!! Can't wait till this year...cooking AND baking!!! WhoooHooo.
