I like this. It brings to mind the responsibility I feel for the Playa and sustaining BRC. I hope I can teach some virgin burners a thing or two I've learned and counteract some of the concerns I've seen over these threads. My small camp of friends (8 of us) are going to be doing daily MOOP patrols next year. Our goal: raise awareness and remind people this is a leave no trace event. And of course, show people that cleaning up after yourself is FUCKING AWESOME. Not sure about our theme approach yet but maybe one of us will wear a Captain Planet costume each day. Or, for some reason dressing like a big baby (with the giant diaper and safety pin) while picking up MOOP just sounds pleasing and approachable.

The notion of a rite of passage, of jumping and knowing the net will appear is well represented by the design of the man itself in its bridge from one leg to the other, from one place, across a deep divide, to another.

what if the bridge was transparent, like at the SF MOMA, and you really had to just trust it.

just walk, one foot in front of the other, like the great scene from "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", where young Kringle teaches old man Winter how to walk again.

for some, especially those with a fear of heights, this may be quite difficult, but necessary, because you cant go back down, too many people, its too late, you HAVE to do it, you have to trust that you will make it, and then, you do...


thats a rite of passage in itself, the first time you dont look down, the first time you jump off a ledge into water, the first time you hurtled down a snow covered hill on a plastic sled all by yourself.

the first time you come to burning man.

fear, apprehension, preparation, anticipation of the unknown yet to occur, and then the moment occurs, and the ritual completes itself by moving the participant from one "place" to another.

the first step is always the hardest, yet afterwards, is remembered as the simplest of things to actually do.

do not make excuses. do not let fear overwhelm your courage that drove you to that point of transition.

Its playful and dangerous...sounds like burning man and all rites of passage to me.

Another thing I was thinking about earlier today was, 'when did I go through, or what was my last rite of passage?' In the default land nothing significant lately. Which is why this theme makes me think about going through the process of being a kid again.
