What was that crazy carnival music on the playa this year?

Postby TheCookieMonster » Tue Sep 14, 2010 3:42 am

I heard it at my base camp (Big Puffy Yellow). I heard it from an art car or two. I heard it playing other places on the playa... I need to find my playa soundtrack!

I heard someone refer to it as "Carnival-House," but have not found anything using that search anywhere (google, last.fm, beatport, etc.).

I don't know music terms, but it was almost like a gypsy/carnival/circus house or dub (of some kind) music....

USE THIS TOPIC TO POST ANY OTHER PLAYA FAVORITES YOU HEARD THIS YEAR... there was so much great music out there and it is impossible to find it all by myself!

Much love....

For a second there, I thought you meant the calliope. Somebody was definitely playing a calliope over by 2:30 and A one day and it was absolutely magical.

That might have been Satan's Calliope, which is a mutant vehicle. Not only is it a Calliope, but it's a Burning Calliope.

It's not this track? It's pretty popular among the Carnival House crowd...

Not sure if this is the same thing, but I could swear I heard old video game sounds while out in deep playa. I think it was coming from the 10:00 side...
2011 was such an amazing year on the playa that there was no decompression for us?!?! 4th year was the charm!! ;) p.s. Love you.

The calliope I heard at 2:30 and A was most definitely not Satan's Calliope. It was the normal kind.
It's going to be alright.

So someone had an honest to god calliope, like they used to make with carasols, on the playa?
Those automatic things. Lovely if true.
Well, I've had a mini-learning experience on calliopes.
This is what I thought they were:

Turns out they are this as well:

An update...

Postby TheCookieMonster » Thu Oct 28, 2010 7:50 am

SO... got in touch with some people from my camp, the name of the DJ was DJ Starseed... given name: Michel Reynolds.

Problem is... I still can't find this carnival-house-music! Next option is to send campmates a thumb drive to get some tracks.

Anyone else heard of this playa DJ and know where I can get some tracks?!?

Thanks... 2 months on the look-out!

They are really something. We are used to recorded music, but that technology recreates the sound on instruments. Is it different? Is the difference important? I don't know. I do know that a lot of composers made piano rolls of their music so we can play those and know how they thought their pieces should go, even if they never recorded a note.

It's its own kind of magic.
