Why can't I edit?

As I understand it, because of the "stand by your words" ethic. People would post crap, get others riled up, then edit it out to make the other posters look insane. Or something like that.

I enjoy a forum where your words are locked in after an hour. Gives you plenty of time to correct typos etc, then..... boom, welcome to responsibility. Learn to live by what you say.

You've got 60 minutes to do just that. Personally I read what I write before I post it, so when I edit it's usually for spelling I missed. I also read my post right after they're posted to make sure it's really saying what I want. I've never had to change the tone, but I would have 60 minutes to do so.

If I need to add something after 60 minutes, I put up another post.

I have other things going on, so I still miss minor errors in sixty minutes and even can't finish all corrections with a technical post sometimes.

But the more important issue is correcting technical errors or things that have changed, including time and location about some things.
You actually can't assume that anything is someone's post, only the post they were stuck with.
It means you can't be sure what someone wished to post, unless you read an entire thread, or even other threads.

This must be extremely frustrating for those with limited internet time.

and post something you need to correct,
what is stopping you from posting again and correcting a previous mis-statement or addendum, or change due to circumstances?

I totally like "standing beside what you say".

I've been called on past statements, I forgot I had made, and, by gum, I had to eat my words.
And, I see no problem with that.

I've also "redacted" (within the allowed hour) snarky or possible incorrect, hurtful statements, made in the "heat of the moment", upon proofreading, or thinking about it.

I could totally see folks abusing the "infinite edit" ability, and, they'd be the ones, usually, that are piss heads anyway.

post a correction, apology, mea culpa, update, whatever.......seems more "human", like a "real" conversation, where, once said, it's out there......deal with it.

You try to get it right, of course, but sometimes your source is just wrong, or you interpret it wrongly.
Some facts change, like the best choice for certain things.

The most frustrating is putting together material from diverse sources, that is not useful in the original form.
I'm a tbi survivor.
Sometimes I just make mistakes.

It doesn't help other people if I can't correct them.
There is always the potential for disastrous consequences with some subjects, if the reader isn't experienced enough to spot risk.

As a workaround, you could use the "quote" feature to re-post the original and show how you changed or corrected or added to it.

I've done that, but it's not an ideal approach, especially on long threads.

Time to crank up the time machine for a quick trip back into eplaya history....

Once upon a time the eplaya had wide open rules. It really was like the wild wild West in here. Did you get into an argument with someone and lose? You could change your post and make that person look like a fool. Did you feel like someone pissed in your sandbox so you wanted to take your virtual toys and go home? You could go in and delete every single post you ever wrote so that all that was left was your name and a big old empty box. When you did this it left huge gaps in the threads and people HATED IT.

Finally when the sock wars and all the crap got to the boiling point the majority of board users were asked about and approved making some changes to the board. The change to the Editing features was a critical part of it. Plonk is another feature that started getting discussed at the same time...The key thing to remember here is these changes weren't made by one power hungry moderator trying to force their mindset on everyone....the changes were discussed, discussed some more, rehashed even more and finally put to a vote where the MAJORITY OF USERS active at the time said this is what we want, make it happen...and the mods went to work and voila...we had a more civilized board...or at least the start of one.

Fast forward to today. The 1 hour window to make edits is a pain in the arse, but it prevents much of the chaos that plagued this board for years. (And in the interest of disclosure when I was having my issues I caused a lot of trouble myself). Once the 1 hour window closes you own it. Every fuckup. Every bit of good advice. Whatever it is, it is, and you're stuck with it. Again...sometimes that sucks but to go back to the alternative...oh hell no!

Some people are such novices to tech areas that they may not know what is critical.

People like us may take for granted certain basic precautions with heavy equipment and voltage, but no one is born knowing these things.

Since this thread has some visibility...I acknowledge again that I really was an ass on here in the past. I had many issues and challenges that got splashed all over the board. And I made a lot of people very miserable as a result.

I can't change the past. I can apologize for the screwups and try and move on. Change is a bitch. I try, I slip, I try again. But I keep at it. There's going to be some people I will never get along with...but quite a few have noticed things have changed and I've been able to rebuild friendships. I hope that continues.

I will shut up with the personal stuff now. Moving on.....
