Never had any problems with the vents...even in serious dust storms. They do make em without vents. The round teal ones.

I got a paintball mask at a thrift store for...a few cents and took the googles off. Done and done and only absolutely free would have been cheaper.

The lower goggles would work. But your looking at higher priced military gear. Vents can be closed, but steam up the goggles. Vents really don't allow that much playa dust in! In my opinion, the new cutting goggles work best. Can remove the tinted lense.

I mainly just lurk on the eplaya, but goggles are a subject I can't help but chime in on!

Most people who don't have good goggles suffer miserably. I suffered my first year when I didn't have a good pair, and I've seen many a first-year dig stinging boulders of playa dust out of their eyes during a white out when their goggles weren't up to snuff.

That being said, I can't underscore how nice it is to have a bitchin' pair of goggles during a whiteout. Having goggles that are vented is absolutely necessary, otherwise they will fog up almost instantly out there in the desert. Make sure the vents have some kind of filter material or baffle around them so too much playa doesn't end up getting in. Ski goggles work very well since they are usually polarized/UV treated, have a massive puffy gasket and good head strap for a good fit, and most brands will have a massive vent on both the top and bottom edge of the frame covered with a thin layer of foam to keep snow out, which just happens to serve as a perfect playa filter. Paintball masks work well if they have adequate ventilation, but it seems like people tend to abandon them due to discomfort and heat build-up. I usually go to the goodwill/thrift stores/garage sales and pick up a couple pairs of ski goggles on the cheap to gift out or use as backups when I drunkenly misplace my nice pair.

If you've got the budget and you know for sure you'll be heading out to the man in future years, I think it makes sense to buy a quality pair of goggles. I've been sold on Wiley X brand since 2005, but really any pair that has a solid head strap and good vents will work. UV treated and polarization is a big plus too. So far I've been using the Wiley X SG-1 model since it comes with a detachable head strap and replaceable lenses that just snap into place (which is great for night time- take out the dark lenses, pop in the clears).

Just please, whatever you do, don't get crappy goggles.

I just ordered a set of the airfoil polarized goggles on amazon, I'm hoping they will be good enough. I also have a pair of these but in shade 5 strength.

I actually bought these goggles recently and I have them now. They are comfortable, durable and cool looking, however the lenses are incredibly foggy and diffused-like. I can barely see out of them (clear and tinted). Just an fyi.

Last year I borrowed my wife's ski goggles and they worked great. For this year, I was cruising the thrift shops and came across a pair of Smith ski goggles for $2.00. I'm a big fan of thrift shops, ever since I found my playa bike at a Salvation Army store last summer.

Do a search on eBay for "MILITARY SUN/WIND/DUST GOGGLES ". That is what I used last year and they were great. I used the dark lens for the day and the clear lens at night. They also fit over glasses (tightly). I just picked up a second pair a few minutes ago for $11.08 for my brother-in-law.

I had 2 pairs of the ESS NVG last year one that i kept a dark lens in and one clear for the night and they both were a total fucking waste fucking things have thin foam all the way around them for "filtered venting" aka shit ass super thin open cell foam that doesn't stop shit... 2 or 3 other people in my camp had these last year and we all had the same experience of them being utter shit for stopping playa dust... i've seen a couple ppl post good reviews of them here on eplaya, but i can't figure for the life of me how yall got good use out of them...

You did pull the protective film off both sides of each lens right? If they still look foggy its cause the 'lenses' are plastic so they get scratched up eventually.

ha ha ha .. it reminds me our Chemical attack trainings in school with this mask...we had, twice a year, training how to get those on properly and also how to clean it, and once a year we went outside the school and had to wear raincoat, put the mask on and put plastic bags on our feet and hands and than march for few minutes...after that we had to put down all the plastic bags, raincoat and mask without touching the outside side (which could be exposed to chemicals)....so funny now...and the best part is, that our masks we had in school, did not have any filters in it...

Yes, anything worn by BMX riders or other bikers who are in the wind a lot work great. Avoid the spongy foam seal though, and look for a rubber seal.

That thin open celled foam is the exact same sort of stuff used in ski goggles. And BMX goggles. See the raves above for this sort of method.

If you seal the goggles completely, they're going to fog. Some sort of filter is required. The most common is open celled foam. Used in pretty much everything except sealed welding goggles... which fog up.

I know what it's for and it doesn't perform at all on these goggles I'll post a hi res pic when I get home tonight the shit foam on this does nothing more than give the appearance of filtering while not actually doing anything. I can see right through the foam because it's so damn thin which means playa is gonna go right throughout em during even the lightest breeze forget about a storm. It's dissapointing because I had high hopes for these pieces of trash
