Is it true Burning Man will be no more in a few years? I heard of this from a friend of mine at a festie last night...I must know of this is true..

Burning Man has to get permits renewed every few years and there are always people opposed to the event happening, one day they may outnumber us (and the money we bring). The government might decide that we cause to much damage to the playa at our current size, they may decide to charge more than the Bmorg is willing to pay....

There are hundreds of variables in play to keep a large event running smoothly, especially one as large and long term as Burning Man. If enough of those don't mesh, it could end. Hell, if Johnny on the Spot went on strike it would shut us down.

Personally, I don't worry so much about things I have no control over. I'll keep going as long as I can, and if it ends I can find somewhere else to play.

However, if you "must know" you'd better find a job as Larry Harveys personal assistant.

Yes, there have been rumors (and only rumors) that 2012 will be the last BM Fesival as we know it. None of this really matters, as the world is going to end on December 21, 2012. I for one, will be charging all of my credit cards up to the limit starting mid-2012.

My thoughts on this are, any event like this grows and matures, and then starts to wilt. Every Federal and State agency imaginable have tried to extract as much money as they can from this event, and the economy has kept ticket prices down. I hope Larry has some sort of grand plan for this, so that he can tell all these greedy agencies to shove their land up their ass, and move this some place else.

Again, this is all rumor and conjecture, but if you have been sitting on the fence thinking about coming to Black Rock City someday, NOW is the time to do it. If you never go, you may be carrying this regret for the rest of your life. Sure, there will be DVDs you can buy to watch--but it's not the same!

God for what they pay - they could buy 500 acres of prime farmland, and grow sod on it every year. Have BM on a nice golf course manicured like lawn. Sell the sod after the show and grow it again next summer, or simply maintain it and mow it.

Central WA, Central OR, even Nevada land is dirt cheap and flat. Oversimplified yes, but the BRDesert is NOT the only place this event could take place - and for a hell of a lot less money in fees.

I wonder, though, if part of it is the super harsh environment?.........just the pure "do it right or die" sort of scene it evokes.
The "Mad Max" sort of world can be imagined, and, in a very real sense, lived, out there.

I would, though, think that there has to be a large tract of private land, somewhere nearby. The railroad has so much out there............all across the great basin.

Burning Man is allegedly being sold to Harrahs Entertainment who want to build a scaled down version of BRC on property they own on the Vegas strip. Rather than have 50,000 people going to the Northern Nevada desert to have fun, they want to bring Burning Man to the world or at least the 40 Million visitors who visit Las Vegas annually. Finally they can level the small placeholder casinos they keep along the strip and build a true megaproject on the 134 acres they have carefully pulled together into one massive block of property.

After all people who come to Vegas know that what happens in Vegas usually stays in Vegas. (Unless you're Vince Neil and you are stupid enough to get a DUI and have TMZ splash it all over the place by morning!) Building the ultimate bohemian hotel / casino concept would be a huge boost to the company, the strip, and to the entire Nevada economy. Look for this to all go down in late 2012.

Kinetic, that looks like great news. It would be nice to see some sort of hotel as part of this venture. I would be willing to pay a good nightly rate for this. Imagine a hot shower when you want it, trash removal and food for sale at the "Center Camp Restaurant and Grill". I can see a gift shop where they could sell real playa swag and small containers filled with "officially lisenced playa dust".
Rides could include, a "playa dust wind tunnel and mutant vehicle" virtual adventure, with surround sound.
If Larry plays this right, he could have Burning Man Playa Style Hotels, coast to coast.

Nudity is permissable, but not on my avocado leather harem-style couch.
