Propane oven

Okay... Here is what I want. But this is what my local Costco has for ~$160.

Who has tried baking bread on the playa? Cookies? Cakes? I make things you can eat. It's a hobby, maybe it's a problem.. but I like to cook, bake, brew.. All my brewing is done months before hand but I haven't figured out a good way to cook or bake. I think I'll probably try getting a couple of big out door propane stoves for stove-top style cooking but I believe in dreaming big. Thus the big plans for a big oven.

Thoughts? Experiences? Suggestions? Snide remarks?

That looks pretty neat! I have seen solar ovens at the burn... Unfortunately I cannot remember what they made. (I do remember they used it to dry stuff so it could be burned...)

Ductch ovens are a challange to use, but you can bake anything in them.

well its better than nothing right? I only bake at home and even then it is minimal. I did alot for awhile trying to make breads that I could eat that were good but in the end, all I make are cookies now and then and cook but I leave baking to people with vastly more skill.

Well, I've never used one of the little ovens, or even one of the RV style ovens... I have used the giant $3000 thing and it's a professional oven that produces professional results. But it's freaking $3000! I would love to give a cheap one a try.

Maybe I can find a propane oven from an RV? I'm sure people ditch dead RVs with working ovens all the time.. Does anyone know what the likely hood of that would be? Or how well they work in the first place. Are RV ovens even worth the bother? I mean.. could you bake a loaf of bread in one of them?

Part of the reason I wonder about this is for my girlfriend. She loves baking. She's exceptionally good at it too. I bet that if she had the tools put in front of her she would be more than happy to make her gift to the playa a freak ton of fresh baked cookies. That's exactly what that huge oven can make.. a freak ton of cookies! Or a 7 layer wedding cake. How awesome would that be? Show up to your on playa wedding naked with an audience of filthy people all eating the most beautiful, fresh wedding cake with their hands?! (well, maybe they would wash their hands first!!)

Less than a hundred bucks.

Or, if you know anyone who will have an RV in or near your camp, you could arrange to borrow their oven. Cookies and/or other baked goods for oven time? :) We did that with our RV. It's still self-reliant, you're not being moochy!

We have a few RVs in camp but all the ovens seem just big enough for a 6 cookie cookie sheet. How do you make Challah in something like that!

PS, I'm considering it... But as you described, it's a fancy toaster oven. I really like the idea of fresh baked bread, or ... oooor... Fresh baked thin crust pizza. A camp dedicated to giving out fresh baked thin crust pizza....

We have one of those ovens, have tested it camping but not on the playa. We have small pans, and aluminum ones to recycle. It takes some practice and watching, but we made fresh biscuits and sweet rolls. We cheated and used the prepackaged ones because making fresh on the playa would take too much prep and clean up. we may make dough to take. Larry has built a nice cabinet for it. So far so good.

Hm, that's promising to hear. It's a price I can (almost) afford. I would love to buy the big boy but until I am rich and famous (or at least graduate college and have a job!) I'm stuck with a students budget. Maybe it will be wedding chocolate brownies?

I saw that at Costco the other day... it looks about like the oven in an RV. My experience cooking in an RV oven is that they are very small, and don't heat evenly; but they work. They also put all that heat energy into the RV interior, so if your neighbor says "HELL NO!" when you ask to bake something during the day, that's probably why, but if it's late and cold out or they have good A/C it's fine.
You just might be the big hit with that thing outside where you can use it without worrying about the heat-soak effect!

Louise baked an apple pie in Death Valley one Thanksgiving. She used a barbecue grill with a cardboard box over the pie. BBQ grills can work as ovens - lots of people bake their turkey in them. Indirect heat from not having the charcoal under the food is one key.

A friend baked pizzas from scratch in Death Valley and on the playa in his solar oven. Dough made from flour, filling made from grating blocks of cheese. MMMMMMMM.

Baking on the playa can be done, but you need to change how you're thinking about it. A nice big Weber is about the interior space of your home oven. Solar ovens can be huge.

True, time to think side ways. I still want the end product to be uniformly heated through both time and space. I've used solar ovens and had problems with both. Also, to make pizza properly you'll need darn close to 500f. A horizontal surface, and even cooking.

And the best time for fresh baked pizza is 2am...

We field tested a camp chef oven out at Flipside this year and it was worth every penny.

We made cinnamon rolls, muffins, roasted up some fresh veggies, biscuits and some puff pastry treats. It will see heavy use on the Playa.

The thermometer on the unit itself is essentially worthless. Get a good oven thermometer.

Haven't been to Flipside but I know many who have. They are a good set of people. very sweet and kind. At least the ones I met.
