Every major Metropolis has a Gay Pride parade!
Friday, September 3rd, 2010. The BRC Gay pride Parade returns to Burning Man 2010, We Gather to show our presence and Pride, our community and participation. This year we're having the parade on friday for all of the city to particpate and maximun attendance. We'll meet at the Man this year at 2pm, gather, take pictures, and march thru Black Rock city ending with a reception at Moonbow camp. There will be refreshments and a DJ for dancing! If you would like to contribute or help, contact me on here.
Everyone is invited to join in, bring your Pride flags, best gay playawear outfits, your campmates, family, friends!

Okay, so, in honesty. Do it? I fully support anyone who has the motivation and energy to organize something for Burning Man. That's why I love it out there. Ever 30 seconds you'll see something you never thought possible.

But.. I've volunteered for a gay pride organization for 8 years and you know what they discovered about gay pride events?... Nobody actually likes them... Not even the gay community... unless its really just a more rainbow covered reenactment of the fall of the Roman Empire.

Marches through the streets? Not a big hit.

Folsom street parade? BIG FUCKING HIT.

...but you are already going to Burning Man. Folsom street is more like Sesame street in comparison.

Yeah, there are gay bigots out there even at Burning man, the first year we had the Parade, they complained to the Rangers about the fags gathering several times! It's really important now to show we are there and to leave the Assholi-ness bigotry at home.
The biggest problem with Pride parades and festivals all over, is how the commercialism has taken over. Parades with floats advertising booze and politicians. It costs $20 bucks to go to the LA Pride festival now, plus expensive booze ($8 for a beer!), and they want you to shop because that's all that there is now there. No art, No expression, No community.
We wanted to get to the basic's, just be there, walk and show our Fab Presence.

And living on the other side of the pride festival experience I can say this: It's expensive.

For a single day event in a park it costs about $10,000 in fees like insurance, clean up, city/park service fees, rental costs (usually mandated by the city), police presence for events deemed "potential targets".. the list goes on. Those fees aren't paid by vendors selling rainbow bracelets because those people never make any money!! It's sad but the beer companies are the people who pay those massive fees. I don't like it either. That's why we finally stopped producing a pride festival and spent all that money on college scholarships! Even liberal art degrees are a better waste of money than needless bureaucratic fees. I'm joking about the art degrees.. mostly..

You should drop by Santa Cruz pride sometime.... No sponsors, no commercialism, all volunteer run.. The parade is like 3 blocks long and starts at a leisurly 11am.... All community and no attitude.....

check this out, the original video of the Jiffy lube incident about homosexuality and censorship! Part 3, has Larry Harvey speaking about it. This is one of the reasons to bring the Pride parade to the forefront and show our presence there!

You're new here. Sorry I won't be rolling out the Welcome Wagon for ya. What I will say is you need to observe how this board works and the posting style before barging in and running your mouth.

Having known some of these people for years, even in a few cases going back over a decade I will say that you won't get a better, more supportive group. They'll dish out the snark, but they'll also support you like few others will. There are good people here. Sit back and see.

As for the subject of a parade, BM has in it's 10 Principles "Radical Inclusion". That alone to me negates the need for any Gay Pride Parade. Fly your flag, do your own thing at BRC, but save the parades for places where you have a shot at confronting the christian fundies and get some media exposure to boot.

You're reading this thread through your own biases expecting to be offended. No one in this thread has said anything anti-gay that I see, just opinions on the parade (and some of the strongest are by people who are gay, so deal with it)

There are a lot of us on eplaya who are gay, and I know I've never had an issue because of it. I've had discussions explaining things, just like I do in my own family, and I don't necessarily want to meet everyone who posts here, but to make a blanket statement about this "place" based on your opinion of one thread shows as much enlightenment as someone banning a book they've never read from the library because they don't like the ideas it might contain.

Have a cocktail, settle down, read some threads & get to know some of the personalities here. You might be surprised.
