I hesitate to say this on one level, because I know some people are so far ahead of me on this topic that there will be dirision and outright howling laughter. On the other hand, I have a shameless streak, so here goes.
I only really "got" mooping in 2009. No, I've always understood how important it is, but I only got into the zone with moop until this past year. I finally was abale to ignore my brain's little comments about how horrible and boring and hot mooping was, and just moop. I was even able to watch my brain go through its paces and just say: "Oh look, there's my brain doing what my brain does. How interesting." For me that's even better than playing "MOOP or Schwag?"

I used to give away prizes to my college-agers for the best moop collected but they started bringing home things that looked suspiciously like someone was really going to miss a part of their camp/vehicle/art installation that walked away with the Mooper.

If it wasn't there when you got there, it should not be there when you leave - I got my first lesson at my first burn, I just kinda showed up and got stuck out at gate, by myself. Some people came to keep me company, and I excused myself to powder my nose. "MOOP!" I was informed...pee on the ground is moop.

LNT just came naturally to me - I mean, it simply makes sense, ya know? Nothing to necessarily..."get." Pick up yer damn trash.

And, of course, the obvious kindness of picking up other people's trash.

Plus, you find all sorts of stuff, when you glance at the ground every once in a while.

It's accurate except english being what it is (a language, they all have double meanings somewhere) MOOP as a verb can also mean to pick it up. It's transitive, but can be used without a do.

In this case to walk around the playa with a bag and pick up trash or moop or whatever you call it. Remember, each of us owes 2 hours of mooping every year and that's in addition to leaving your campsite clean.

MOOP or Schwag is a great game. But it has it's dangers, including focusing too much on your next ground score and losing sight of the fact that it's not about your greed. I don't do much meditation, but I've done enough to develop some interest in watching my mind do its thing. When I get into that brain state I can go "Oh look, there I am wanting to find something wonderful. Hm."

I do the same as you, always mooping. Some years I moop the portos on Sunday morning. Yuck.

I think the sticking point is the word "owe", yes? But the please was nice.

But I do think even if we all picked up after ourselves, even if we were diligent in preparation beforehand, there still would be moop. Small things slipping unnoticed from a pocket or pack, bits and pieces whipped off in the high winds, That one loose button, the nut coming off the bolt...

Not to mention the fact that a certain number of people on-playa at any given time during the event are in odd mind states, and might not keep as strict track as we might like them to of their stuff.
Of course, I lose all sorts of things. House keys, money, important directions and phone numbers, hair ties. Oh, not on playa, but where ever, I simply am human and don't have the superpower of always being able to keep track of every single thing of mine.
And then there's the fact that doing your two hours of moop is a good way to teach yourself humility and acceptance of the fact that man is a garbage producing animal.
And of course, it's always worth working towards the realization that the objective isn't schwag, and isn't two hours of resent-tinged labor, but a clean playa. Isn't this the last year of our current permit? We might want to put forth a little extra effort.
Or, you know, not.

I have yet to commit to the two hour round, and have absently picked things up that I see. I usually have a plastic bag somewhere in my kit. I do appreciate the commitment to the task, and think it's a good way to be out and about, sort of like having to walk a dog... meeting new folks along the way. So, yes, this year I will. It's nice to have a task, makes being wherever I might be more comfortable sometimes. Like helping to set up for a party.

I had the thought of a moop conga, with jabbing nail ended sticks... da dah dah da da DAH! (stab)

I pick up stuff all the time as I'm walking out there (after my first year, I viewed city gutters with a whole new obsessive/compulsive light that I had to really restrain myself from). We're usually the last to leave in our area so we walk a great big grid.

I like to play a game in my own head and see how many pieces of string and thread I can find amongst the other stuff found on the walk of the neighborhood. It's surprising how many thread bits you can find.
