I don't know if you even have to go there. Sheep are domesticated. At least the ones from which we get sheepskins mostly are. Wolves are wild. I don't know how we'd feel about "dogskin." But certainly, dog has always been an option for the fashion-conscience and impoverished set.
Sheep, as I understand it, for the most part, could not survive long outside our care. They do wonderfully under it. (Okay, I've never seen a sheep centered CAFO. I'm sure that some sheep are miserable. But I figure the ones I see in the open air are doing ok.) And the sheepskin is a side benefit to the mutton, so it's not being killed simply for the skin, whereas a wolf is typically killed for spite and the skin just seems like rubbing its face in it, metaphorically speaking.
And if I were smarter, I wouldn't have said this in public forum.
