He's a retired officer - but the boyf's in the Guard (deployment 2011), my cousin and his wife leave for Afghanistan this spring, and I have a lot of family members in the military (or formerly in the military).

Ahhh, I could always tell when the Navy had a boat docked at White Beach, on the way to BC Street outside of Kadena Whisper Alley would be packed wall to wall with sailors. We knew to steer clear of the Alley for a week to let the girls recoop from that invasion

Kadena was a nice base in that we Airmen shared it with Marines and Navy and got to interact with them on a reg. basis. It was interesting to see how the other branches did things. The Navy flew the P3C Orion outta there and the Marines flew A4's -A7's, as well as the Harrier, which used to royally annoy us on the flightline as the pilots would practice hovering. Ahhh, the sounds of a kick-ass jet engine and the smell of JP4, hmmmmm, smelled of..............Victory!

Always could tell who the Marines were off base, they were the only ones who'd eat the banana after the show

But first the DJ said "You probably know it from 'Apocalypse Now' but there's another Veteran's Day connection. The valkyries were the beings that went forth on bidding from the Norse god Odin, to select the bravest warriors to die and come feast forever in Valhalla."

Yes! That made my day.

I have always believed that heroism has nothing to do with dying, rather the cold decision to show up.



By the way, I have designed a world war II memorial sculpture, if anyone is interested.
It is modular, so could be done very reasonably, or could be expanded to a grand scale.
In full scale, it is intended to recognize civilian support of all kinds and the many civilian casualties of that war, but the front figure is military.
If you know some place that wants a design, let me know.
