As for "leaving it at home", what a joke. What, was this your first burn? Not really picking up on the psychedelic aspect of BM? A little risky.. What she have to lose?
And that's the way it should be.
tapeta wrote:I thought the cop presence was pretty normal until...I had just left an art installation on the open playa and was biking towards the man, when a BLM pickup truck came screaming by me, going about 40 mph, missed me by a few feet. Much annoyed, I followed the fucker down to where there was a large group of maybe 5-6 BLM ranger trucks. About 8 large, burley BLM guys, fully armed, heavily equipped with subduing objects (clubs, handcuffs) had surrounded a five-foot tall naked woman and it was clear that arrest was on their mind.
What the five-foot tall naked woman did next was pure genius. She grabbed a camera and started recording the BLM jocks. They backed off in a hurry and the situation continued to de-escalate until the BLM guys started to leave. But not before I talked to a couple of them about driving fast on the playa and how a tap on the horn might be viewed as a sign of courtesy when passing a bicycle.
The woman in question:
-did not appear to be inebriated.
-was riding, not driving an art car.
-had a young child with her.
I hung around a bit to see exactly what the rumpus was, but she got real busy talking to her art-car mates and I was ready to move on so I did. So I do not know what the BLM guys were on about.

None of that is the decision of an individual ranger.

Those BLM rangers are part of our community too, some not by choice. Welcome them home if you can, but stay clear if they won't be part of the community themselves.

While the other agencies were in BRC, Washoe County literally would just do a drive through and leave. Washoe County definitely was not trying "...to do all law enforcement at Burning Man trying to put BMORG in pincer move...".

You are talking about this year, I'm talking about BLM tactics over ten years, and over ten years the makeup of law enforcement at Burning Man has changed. One thing overall is for sure, take a look at the afterburn reports for ten years back, look at the population growth relative to both the size of law enforcement and the law enforcement budget for Burning Man. The growth of the size and budget for law enforcement for Burning Man is out of proportion with population growth, and you have to guess that whoever was asking for that money wants more money from us.
Now that the population growth has slowed and is now reversing there needs to be a reckoning. Less people with disproportionately large law enforcement means problems.

marcgorcey wrote:There appeared to be more undercover operations this year.
Last year, I witnessed some folks who looked unburner like approach groups of people and not-so-subtly asked to be "hooked up".
This year, we had a few more reports but the folks involved were dressed-up to look more like burners. My contacts did tell me that there was something off about them - their clothing appeared too new, or the folks appeared ill-at-ease in them.

That said...
There were still a lot of cops patrolling the Playa... felt like I was in a Police State.....
Way to oppressive....

i saw a couple flashing lights on burn night, but that was as close as i got.
i'm just lucky i guess.
