I would rather drive than fly.
2,000 miles isn't enough to justify flying.

If it was Air Brasil, it might be worth it to see the air hostesses.

Lets see if I can do the math.

Sydney to Auckland (flight) :1342 miles (3hrs)
Auckland to LA (flight) :6517 miles (12 1/4 hrs)
LA to Gerlach (share ride) : 624 miles (9 2/3 hrs)
Gerlach to Burningman : 37 miles ?

Total : 8520 miles (7 days away from the real world bloody fantastic)

I usually have a meltdown somewhere in the middle of Nebraska on the way back, although I held off until Ames, IA last year. I'm hoping I can make it to Rochester, MN this year... *crosses fingers*

About 1100 miles from Albuquerque, NM, give or take.

550 to vegas and a little less than 600 from vegas to brc. average drive time including stops is about 17 hrs one way at an average drive speed of 80mph.

During the year I lived in Hell, er, Racine, Wisconsin, it was almost exactly 2,000 miles from my the apartment building to Gerlach, NV. Now I am back in the Madison, WI area (either Fitchburg or Madison, depending upon who you ask), which is a bit further west and a bit farther north.... I haven't checked the distance, but I'd guess I am about 2,000 miles from Black Rock City.

Spiritually, metaphorically, etc., the distance varies. :wink:

not this estimate. It's 1200 miles not 1051, and to average 95.5 miles per hour, with the 10-12 fuel stops, traffic lights, etc. the 25 mph speed limit through
Nixon and Empire, means exceeding 140 mph many many times along the way. Bad math.

I must be missing the problem there, unless you're towing a trailer.

There are a lot of variables though.
Last time I went through DC, I went right through the center in about twenty minutes total.
When I realized I was missing all the traffic in the cities, I didn't stop for anything until I hit NC.
It was an easy overnight drive from the cape to North Carolina, but I didn't see traffic after nyc.
None at all.

989 miles round trip with minimal off route driving en route. I drive 60 or less and very slow at times up the passes. Fully loaded box truck and car trailer. If solo I only stop for fuel and broke down burners. I make the trip in roughly 11 hours at night to avoid traffic and to get to BRC as early as I can. One of these years I swear I'm going to stop in at the Eagles Nest RV Park on the way down.
