Pizza! Now that's a theme I can really get into. Pizza for breakfast, pizza for lunch, pizza for dinner, half of my freezer is filled with pizza. Pizza even goes with tequila...hell almost anything goes good with tequila. One can never have enough pizza!

Admittedly I was being purposefully incendiary but at what point was I critical of the people?
I met plenty of very nice people at last year's burn and serious plans are already being undertaken to form a camp with several of them this year. And, London being the international hub that it is, I've met countless others. Some of them I got on well with, though a couple of them did in the long run turn out to be Canadian..
Whether you guys like it or not foreigners will be attracted to Burning Man. Do you honestly want them all to be gibbering sycophants? I thought BM was all about radical self expression.
So my problem remains.

Teo & Kinetic, part of the fun of big arse fancy dress parties is having a fitting costume.
So short of playing music and emulating a person from movies & entertainment; thus moving Burning Man one step closer to Orlando & Disneyworld and that nice, comfortable, homogenized and sanitized experience you talked about; or being a dullard fuck with a miscellaneous off-message costume, what scope does this theme give foreigners that want to be a little creative. At least with last years theme you could wear something green if you didn't want to go with the earth vibe.

Yeah, I think the problem is contained in the quote. This isnt a "fancy dress" party with mandatory costumes. Burning Man for years didn't have any theme at all. (In fact, it would be more true to its original DIY roots were it not to have a theme.) But it started having a theme a few years back, and the themes were interesting until last year and this year. So, maybe you really are missing the historical context of themes at Burning Man. Its understandable, I didnt arrive at this realization until recently.

Go, contribute in some way. If not with a "costume" then contribute by being incredibly kind, giving, understanding and non-judgmental. Make a piece of art, build a bar, give massages. You might be surprised how far that can go instead of blasting on about things you, quite honestly, dont know all that much (i.e. Burning Man, American culture.)

Also, its amazing how many Europeans who come to the States to work initially are just filled with so much doo doo as if every single person in America elected George Bush, and every single person is happy with what he has done and where he is taking us. But, by the end of their stay here in the States and getting to actually know real Americans, many of these people I know wind up loving this place and find ways to stay. I know three such women (UK, Germany and Denmark) and know of about four Germans in my camp who would agree with what I just said and all who live here permanently.

BM is an event that's been going on since 86 and if for one stinking year out of the last 22 you cant tolerate a theme that touches on America-the host country-- then maybe you are the rigid thinker type who just dilutes what's so special about BM. Stay at home until there's a theme you can "relate" to.

Me talking about smoking and drinking is no reason to call one shallow, especially when that is all your basing it on. I'm not a shallow person. From what I've seen thus far in Sensei's posts show no wisdom, rather it radiates this sort of "I'm a stuck up asshole" sort of feeling. No reason to start giving people shit after their very first post. I guess I don't need to pay $350 to camp in the desert with thousands of other people. I'd rather attend a more welcoming event. Maybe I will just camp on my own here in Texas.

The eplaya represents maybe 1/60th of the event's overall population. One would be foolish to use this board as a reference as to how the participants at the event itself will interact with you.
It's also good to remember this is an online experience where people can sit behind keyboards and not see face to face the person they are talking to. Without visual or even audible queues, what someone writes as a humorous or generic comment can be quickly misintrepreted...especially by someone who's new to the place and doesn't know the unwritten rules of how this place works.

In short...this is a giant electronic sandbox. If you want to play here there's plenty of room, but perhaps it would be a good idea to sit back and observe for a little bit so you don't walk in and crush someone's sand castle or fragile egos...which can lead to nasty backlashes as you're finding out...unfortunately, the hard way.

Also...having met Sensei on several occasions face to face, there's a lot of things I could categorize him as but asshole wouldn't even come close to making the list. He's a great person...worth the time to talk to, IMHO.
