.
Kinetic Sculpture Racing Camp is returning in 2008!
Granted, there will probably not be a whole lot of activity on this thread for the next few months, as it is now September and eleven months until Burning Man 2008.
But Kinetic Sculpture Racing Camp 2007 was such a fabulous success, that I want to establish this thread now, so we are “off and running” towards 2008.
Queen Shaye (Rutabaga Queen 2005) will be Kamp Kommander -- having shown herself a splendidly capable administrator with both the Grand Championship and the BM KSR Camp in 2007.
(Yours Truly will most likely be near by, hopefully providing the sound track for KSR Camp with Real Music Camp.)
To recap, Kinetic Sculpture Racing is a human powered sport/hobby/art-form/behavioral-disorder where we “race” over land, sand, mud and water. Of course, few of us care about who gets to the finish line first -- it’s all about how much fun we can have trying to get to the finish line at all!
At our Burning Man KSR Camp, we give rides on our racing sculptures, supervised and non-supervised as appropriate for the machine in question, and the apparent talent off the rider(s).
(Only once did we lose a Kontraption in 2007, and we found it near The Man within hours. The dust storm was no doubt a factor, which we understand. But do try your very best to bring the silly thing back, and if you cannot, PLEASE tell us where it is -- absolutely no hard feelings.)
For an introduction to the sport, you can start with http://kinetickingdom.com/.
Here is a shot of KSR Camp 2007, at 4:30 and Coral Reef, with Bob Durst’s red dicycle front and center:
And here are some random shots from the sport. More later -- specially if you ask.
(Yes, most of these shots are of me. It's what I have handy. More variety later.) _________________ Kinetic Cab Company at Esplanade & 9.

More photos from KSR Camp 2007:
A random view from inside the camp towards the street corner.
A visitor turned out to be a veteran Kinetic Racer.
Two visitors test drive Dave Hershberger’s “Son Of Unwheeldy”.

The race in Ventura drew a TV crew from New York, and the result is a 30 minute film which will be broadcast January 16th and 17th.
Although "broadcast" may not be the correct word -- it is going to be on a channel called Treasure HD, which is part of the "premium" High Definition package on Dish Network. The satellite channel number is 9473. (You may also find it on something called Voom HD.)
The program is part of a series called Magnificent Obsessions. The name of the episode is Kinetic Sculpture Race.
These times are East Coast:
Wednesday 16 January 2008, 8 PM and Midnight -- continuing every four hours; 4 AM, 8 AM, Noon and 4 PM Thursday 17th.
Here on the West Coast:
Wednesday 16 January 2008, 5 PM and 9 PM -- continuing every four hours; 1 AM, 5 AM, 9 AM and 1 PM on Thursday 17th.
(Sure hope I got that right!)
I have not seen it yet, but I'm in it, so it's sure to be wondermuss.

In other news....
This famous Kinetic Kontraption, the Counterfeit Cadillac, is now at Clearlake Mechaniacal Laboratorium for repair, and will most likely be on the Playa this year:
It weighs about 800 lbs with all the water equipment. More like 500 stripped for the Playa. Built by George Stevens of Southern California in the early 1990s. The body is fiberglass.

Hello everyone! I must say, I am impressed. Thanks for the best post I have ever read - the best post in the universe. So many exciting ideas, pictures, people, stories and events are all piled in one thread. I just HAD to add my 2 cents, in the form of these amazing fish pics: http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110414. I truly hope you find them as great as I do.

Well.... "Life is what happens while you are making other plans." -John Lennon
And in the case of Kinetic Sculpture Racing Camp, the other plans seem to have been at least superceded by new plans.
Since September last year, the 25 people of KSR Camp 2007 have branched out in different directions, and this year there will not be a formal KSR Camp after all. Some of us are concentrating on the American Dream theme with the Shaye For President Camp and Installation. Others will be in Camp Inspiratum, which has been a closely KSR-related camp for years. Look for more Kinetic Racers at Department of Spontaneous Combustion -- straight from the Kinetic Lab in Arcata.
And last but not least: Some of our Kinetic Racers who came to BM for the first time last year to be part of the KSR Camp... simply are not willing to put up with all that "generous sharing" of thundering techno sounds again. There go the best Kinetic Racing Sculptures and the best bicycle repairmen.
But we are better organized this year! There will be Rally/Parade of Kinetic Racing Sculptures and other Large Human-Powered Vehicles at 2 PM Wednesday. The event gathers at Silicon Village Plaza and will inevitably end up at The Man by 5 PM (safely before dinner and Sunset Cheer). All human powered vehicles, other than plain bicycles, welcome -- and plain bicycles are welcome to tag along also! _________________ Kinetic Cab Company at Esplanade & 9.

Sounds awesome! I'll be there, what style of music would you like to hear from my Trike's new 200watt sound system? Juno Reactor? Infected Mushroom? Maybe some Depeche Mode? I don't do show tunes ...oh all right maybe some 'Hello Dolly' would be pretty surreal out there. _________________

How about opera? Wagner, with cannon? (Or was that the Rooshian guy?)
Yes, going to Corvallis next weekend -- July 18-20 --, with Counterfeit Bluesmobile and Pear County Chopper Trike.

Ding, ding, ding!
You are correct!
Flight of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner would be delightfull on the playa.
Though it isn't an opera but an orchestral piece. Actual cannons would be a plus!

Even better! I've never been a big fan of fat ladies in fake braids anyway. Flight Of The Valkyries -- yes, that must be the one I had in mind.
Edvard Grieg's In The Hall Of The Mountain King (I Dovregubben's Hall) would work nicely too.

Ohho! I have Phantom of the Opera to add to my playlist. Unjon is right, his stereo needs a fire permit Elliot you better get a sound system on one of your rigs so as to help spread kinetic music. _________________

Ah... let's see.... Ride Of The Valkyries. There is something called Flight..., but that's something else.
My Kinetic Music these days is anything performed by The Blues Brothers -- to go with the Counterfeit Bluesmobile.
