Okay, I tested that second link, and it got me where ClarkCon wanted to send me. (I've put in a space after each "http:" so we can see the guts of the things.)
So, that blah, blah and "&start=44190" is the top of hte page. I think that means that that is the 44190th post in that thread. But I like LeChat's "two flying women" remark, so I want to start it there. I count the number of posts=11. Then I add 11 to 44190 and get 44201. So that's the number that I put at the end of the link.

I think you got it with teh second.
Although, to make sure, you could always start with the first few words of the post in question.

By hand.
And I was having a bear of a time if I went backwards from page 204 to 203. The url was different somehow. So you might have to count backwards from a good number to get an old post. I don't remember it being hard, but it has been a while.

I just accidentally found an easier way for you to link to a specific post- look next to the "posting date" at the top of the post:



Right click (on PC) that little box & "open in new tab", you'll get this:



The address in the bar will link right to the post you want. You still have to set the url by hand, but you don't have to guess at the post number anymore.

I note there seem to be two different address formats, at the end.
One, seems a straight set of number:
posting.php?mode=reply&t=8136

the other, a compound number, of sorts:
viewtopic.php?p=648730#648730

seems one comes as a result of a search, or shortcut of any sort, the other, if you page forward or back, from a starting point.

Eric may well have nailed it, using that method.
The other way, might still be best if searching in the dark.
