I guess when Bin said "tell jokes" I thought of "tumbler" as in jester, so it made sense to me.

Same thing, I think - the "tummler" in the Borscht Belt resorts was the guy who kept the guests entertained, introduced the performers, kept the mood up.

Welcome! There's a lot to be said for 'sperging as a preparation method; it served me very well.

So, tell us please, who is "we" and where are you coming from? That's a geographic inquiry, not a philosophic one.

I'm from the "enthuse-the-crowd" school of tummlering.

I'm from the Midwest. My niece, brother-in-law, and 12-year-old son are all in for attending. I remember reading a huge Burning Man book back in 1998 or so, and keeping the candle-head man photo from the New York Times posted on my office wall, but thinking simultaneously that I could not stand the heat, the dust, or the crowds of people in altered states and that it looked like my sort of event. Over a decade later, I have learned to embrace heat and am far less delicate about dust and environmental particulates, while my fascination with BM has never left. This past summer, I finally got the idea of "radical self-reliance" in a way I never had, and BM resurfaced fiercely, you know, like a cat that keeps nudging you until you get up and fill its empty food bowl.

I delurked because I had something I just had to post.

It sounds like you'll have the whole family jambory of Burning Man camps.

I'm still contemplating bring my Niece in 2013. At that time she will be 12. By then, I'll have seen a hand full of burns, done the crazy party thing, the theme camp thing, and hopefully this year the village thing. I also, find that each year when I leave, I say to my self "next year, I'm going to spend more time sober" and have a feeling that by 2013 I'll be spending my burn almost entirely sober. Which is when I'll bring my niece.
What are your thoughts about bring a 12 year old to such an crazy place?

His name is Ggreg Taylor, or Nambla the Clown. Hasn't been the last few years, but was a regular from the very early years (I know him, and he's part of the reason I started going as well).

I remember that guy! I believe I saw him my virgin year near Center Camp during a whiteout. His makeup was more goth-masculine and he was wearing a three piece suit.

Needless to say, he was very striking.

Yes, that is the very person! I remember thinking, "Oh, it must be hard to sleep in that head gear." How naive I was back then, in the 1990s!
