Hot Damn, 40K Users!

Postby trilobyte » Mon Jul 23, 2012 6:31 pm

I'd been watching the needle move oh-so-slowly over the last few weeks, and then bam… when I was looking the other direction we crossed the 40,000 user mark! Woohoo! Drinks (of your choice) all round!

Ha - even with Simon factored in we're over the mark.

The majority of the board's users are generally in lurk mode (you'd be surprised at the number of PM's and requests I get from people who have not yet made a public post). Then you have a healthy amount of turnover and generally dormant accounts - people who no longer participate in the event, or who no longer have interest in the boards, or may just be taking the year off, etc. 35K of the total has 5 or fewer posts, but there's nothing wrong with that (the board has a ton of great info and is constantly getting even better, a lot of questions can be answered without ever actively posting). All sellout/kerfuffle issues aside, we've had a steady increase in new active users over the last year.

You really want to go there? Your camp's doing the public begging thing for 30 large and public whining thing about trouble booking talent. His is working their ass off to do fundraising events and not engaging in public whining.

40,000 users? All of the sudden the Meet & Greet doesn't seem all that popular.

Believe it or not, less than half are spammers and socks (and we're up to nearly 45K now). We have a lot of dormant accounts (people chased away or who have fucked off for whatever reason), and a huge number of lurkers *waves to those watching from the sidelines* who have accounts but only really read the site.

While part of me wants to shout "Hey, participate!" to all the lurkers, I've come to realize that for them, the board is a reference tool that helps them get it together so they can make it out to the event and be full-on participants...and that's pretty cool.

Still less than last years attendance...I say its a good thing! KEEP BURNING MAN POTENTIALLY UNPOPULAR! Maybe it is for selfish reasons...but to keep the meaning pure...whatever that may be...you need to keep it quiet. Let the results speak for themselves.
