Is there any way to add a search function in the Members area? And/or add a possibility of filtering in true alphabetical rather than first letter then date of adherence?

Just a regular search doesn't get you very far if, say, the person's name is a common noun, verb or adjective that appears in thousands of posts.

Seems it would be handy.

Secretly, we already have one!

After clicking on the Members link to get the members list up, look for the link that says "Find a member" (it's on the left side, under the word Members and to the left of the links for All and then A-Z browsing).

Another way to look for a specific person whose name might be something found in the text of a lot of posts is to use the advanced search button (top right of the screen). On that page, you can use 'Search For Author' and type in the user's name (or partial username with a *… ie trilob*).
