Ha ha, I wish I had some insider info, I just bug people tell they respond.
Did you get any emails that would sign you up for the Ice Team mailing list?
In the mass email they sent out Wednesday last week, they mentioned that they got a lot of volunteer requests, and that they will be sending out info on shifts in mid August.

LOL! Yeah, I think we all put down for the Tuesday 9-noon as soon as the sent 2012 Ice Cube volunteer link.
Though, we do have the "unofficial" approval from Gentle for the Tuesday ePlaya Penguin shift.

I had the email last week that said it would be mid-August before they notified shifts. I know that people volunteer to manage these things and that everyone has commitments in defaultia but I think mid-August is very late.

Most of us are with theme camps and are organising or helping to organise events with these. Changing events last minute to fit around Ice shifts may not be easy or possible, Most of these events will have been published in the Playa Events calendar and the date for inclusion in the WWW is now past. The events are also dependant on others who may not want or be able to modify their plans.

Earlier next year would be good!

Don't be so eager to book (or double-book) your time on the playa. Especially considering that it's your first year.

Ice shifts are pretty highly coveted and they run a pretty rocking operation (times three), If you're not sure you can work with their timetable (for any reason) I'd suggest reconsidering. It's a big city, there are many volunteer opportunities (including walk-up stuff).

I've picked my shifts out for ice but beyond that I am not committing to much more. I do plan to do walk up volunteering but am leaving myself open and flexible....(ha! that sounds weird or inviting or weirdly inviting) heeeheeeheee

In the couple years I've done Ice, I've gotten the shift I asked for each time. Also, after they send out the confirmations, they typically ask "If your plans have changed and you aren't able to work the shift/position you are currently scheduled for, please let us know."
So, if it turns out your plans don't come together, there are no hard feelings about canceling a shift- as long as its before August 24th.

I have not done it before. I am looking forward to it. Last year was actually my first year so I held off on signing up to help. Now that I know how special it is It's time to give a little back:)

Plus it looks like fun and I get to touch cold things.
