These are my thoughts for participation and gifts 2012; I’d love to hear if I’ve made a faux pas or better still how to improve these things or better ones!
I attended BRC in 2001 and was at best a passenger – Whilst I had been prepared for the environment (equipment wise anyway) by a much more organized girlfriend and other friends the scale and content of BRC blew my mind - I just wish I could remember more!
This year my partner and I are coming to BRC and I want to do it differently:
No more rushing from art to art / event to event – I know can’t see it all!
I want to look more closely and really appreciate those things that ‘speak’ to me, not literally of course but some possibly will.
I also really want to participate more:
Gifting
I want to give, in fact I love to give and pride myself on getting good gifts, which leaves me struggling – I will not buy impersonal trinkets.
My current idea as a keen amateur photographer is to take nice (hopefully) photos of those who allow it and provide details for how to get them in the real world. I know I would have loved to get some photos from 2001.
(I’m considering a MOOP control process in place so that people are aware that dropping cards or the like will lead to shaming – me included of course).
I like to share a drink and plan to hand out (wan)kir royales [sparkling wine and blackcurrant liquer] – it relates to a nickname of mine – I hated being called tosser but now quite like it.
I appreciate people don’t like to take things from open bottles but they can either wait for a fresh one to open or go without!
I will also bring mixer (good advice from this forum!) and spirit gifts for frequented bars.
Volunteering
I work as an environmental scientist specializing in catchment management, in particular stormwater for waterway health. Often at the weekends I work as a dive instructor – yes these are anti skills for the playa so no help there!
I was thinking to bring safety boots, gloves, cable ties, duct tape etc. and wander round theme camps seeing if I could help out.
Potentially also lamplighters and potty patrol (particularly appealing given my professional skills are shit for the playa).
Given the risk of member shortages in some of the member camps perhaps it would be more appropriate to assist there instead though.
Open to suggestions, or even requests – thanks T
