"Participate" versus "don't commit your first year"

I didn't participate my first year as far as gifting or theme camps, etc. My main concern was getting there (I have to drive 2 days across country to do it) and then surviving.

Now I did participate in some of the theme camp activities, center camp, rode on mutant vehicles, etc. I didn't just stare, I joined in.
