Thank You Mom and Dad!

This isn't an on-playa experience, but it was so cute I had to share. The background info: My parents are both 75 and pretty conservative, yet they love hearing about Burning Man. They jokingly call it "Drug Camp." I always wonder how much of what I tell them is actually digested, and how much goes out into the ether. My family celebrates Christmas a week early, so this was the text of the card I got from them today....

Dear Cliff (my playa name,)

We had no doubt that you would get your very important ticket. To keep the celebration going, we are gifting you 25,000 reward miles to cover your airfare to Drug Camp. Please use the extra funds to burn a little brighter and warm those around you.

Cliff, thanks for sharing that - what a great story to close the year with! My 76-year-old mom and my hisband's 86 year-old-mom both loves hearing about it too, looking at the pictures, and imagining themselves there.

On the flip side, our oldest daughter did manage to get her parents to the playa... It had been something my husband and I had been saying for many years that we wanted to do, but she ended up being the pioneer burner in the family a couple of years ago. She's now 30, and I'm... well... older than that. It was great this past year being on the playa together - and camping several "blocks" apart from each other. We visited with each other often, of course we fed her and her campmates often, and she was quite proud when she learned that her mom rode in Critical Tits:-)

We are all looking forward to doing it again in 2012.

I had a very similar happening at xmas... My wife got a hole of one of my closest and long time friends (a Burning Man vetern for many years) and got me an entry ticket for the holidays and my bday.. She knows my friend has been trying to get to come out for a few years for all the artwork that is involved in BM. The great things is the last main night is my Bday this year... dont really celebrate but now i have a real reason.

Little does she or my friend know what they have unleased...
