No, I think heavy equipment is the last thing that helps. The main "tracks" on the playa show what repeated travel does let alone repeated excavating....

Anyway, I'll be converting my rickshaw to motorcycle wheels anyway. So bumpy last year all the welds on the seat bucket and canopy started to give out.

This year I'll be riding on low pressure motocross tires - that'll give me smoooooooth even if the play don't provide.

Nice, Eric. Yeah I just saw that fabric for sale. I'm thinking of making a pair of drawstring pants for some daytime lounging. Although.. last year I had a few pairs of pants to wear, yet could never drag myself to get out of my fuzzy faux leopard furs ones. In fact.. out of the entire tub of clothes I brought last year, I literally wore about 5 different articles.. the night pants, the day pants, the light thermal, the heavier thermal, the fleece pullover.

Yes, after the water that was on it and the more recent snow, there is a better than even chance the playa could be in good shape this year. But after scraping almost 45 miles of roads and driving lots of trucks and heavy equipment on it, it's certainly not virgin stuff. Just making the city and installing things with bigger rigs, ruts appear. Just outside the fence will always be better than the pentagon that is Black Rock City.

I'll be down the end of this month and then the end of May. Expect it be pretty dicey, even with the Subaru, in March. Hoping to get to do some major playa driving over Rendezvous long weekend. As always, avoid the dark spots. That, though, is not foolproof. Traveling in pairs with long ropes or winch is recommended. Travel at intervals and go fast.

This year's site inspection was delayed a loooong time because the playa's been underwater (or snow) since last September - and there's still standing water in some locations, although for the most part early returns are that once dry the surface is awesomely, beautifully hard packed like only a really wet winter can do.

So I'm guessing the prospects are looking good for this?

I was just out on the playa. Where it wasn't too wet too attempt to drive, in the daytime, it was in pretty good shape. 'Course there was that night driving (forgot about the wet, probably due to 10 High) with the trailer on looking for a great spot to watch the sunrise. AWD might have helped, but it all seemed good, from what I remember. With all the wind and rain and cold, it might have been the most fun I had all week.

But who knows what will happen when it actually dries.

According to a friend at Juplaya, the surface is in the best shape she has seen in years. Hard and flat with acres of pristine cracked mud surface. Hoping it doesn't get too pulverized before we get there!

I drove around last year, over the Fourth, all over the playa, looking for 'that' spot. I did find it. And we set up our camp there. What you said, wedeliver, riding at night with perfect playa. I think it was over by the Coyote Dunes. It does happen. But not in Black Rock City. Or around it. After they scrape 45 miles of roads and heavy equipment installs art on the near playa it changes it. You want virgin playa, look for it other than Burning Man.

It was like that in 2003 as well (my virgin year)- I had a super lightweight bike and I could pedal it a few times and just coast for ages. It was a dream. Agree the playa hasn't been like that since, and neither has my bike (damn bike thieves in SF).
