I know that this question is a little late, and forgive me if it has already been discussed (I'm new here!).

At the 2010 festival, our camp heard several rumors of an art car themed as Uncle Sam and organized by the Nevada Police. Apparently they would allow unsuspecting burners to get onto their car and watch for illegal activity. They would then retain all "criminals" and drive them directly to a local jail.

I didn't see it in the news, so I was wondering if this actually happened or if we were gullible to a bit of prank gossip. Thoughts? Thanks!

Yup, I took a ride on it and actually shared a joint with the guy that was driving. Good thing I didn't know he was a cop else I might have got arrested.

Sounds like playa rumor to me.
Which isn't to say that it couldn't happen in outline (driving people off to reno or the nearest lock up in the art car seems really off). There is certainly police presence on playa. There does seem to be consistent attempts at catching people--showing up at camp offering drugs or asking for them out of nowhere, for instance. Mostly people get arrested for stupidity above and beyond the call of duty, afaict. But the playa is also a place of story telling and rumor and a lot of what sounds plausible at 3 am when you've been drinking and dancing for hours, sounds pretty silly at home. (Real home, not the festival.)
No one's mentioned this so far on this board that I've read.

I haven't heard of this one, but there have been police art cars on the playa.

I have made some suggestions for dealing with them, when found.

Typically they are barely decorated or completely plain.
Look for a dmv tag and note the number.
If there is no tag, draw your own conclusions.

They have tried to sell rides for drugs, but waiting for someone to use something isn't unknown or asking to share something.

I also herd this same rumor at the festival, so I set out to look into it, I didn't actually go for a ride on the thing, but the guys on it were middle age men, with "party dude" type clothes, and they were having a conversation win a couple of police officers. My conclusion was that it was true.

Also to add to my conclusion, my GF took her ranger training, she was told that the police did have an art car or two on playa for 2010.

There was a school bus near us that was rumored to be a cop art car--the 'sch' was covered and it said 'cool bus' on the front...it had no other 'art car' accoutrements that we could see and we never found out if it was true...

I saw a Giant Flaming Penis getting pulled over by the two police cars on the Playa in 2010... no I was not drinking, and I have photos to prove it :lol:

... Not sure what it was doing to get pulled over... If anyone remembers this please let me know.

I know exactly what happened. WEll, I wasn't there, but the driver/owner of that mv is a member of this board. I'll let him decide what details he wants to open to the general public.

Yes, that is mine.

It scared the fuck out of the cops (said he jumped out the seat and could feel the hot wind on his face and made the hair stand up on his neck), and I got a Driving with Negligence ticket for doing that to him.

It happened after the Temple burn on Sunday

I am fighting it, and court is in 6 weeks.

Chris 2010, if you have some previous pics of it going off behind the cop cars it could prove invaluable in court.

After going through all my photos for oneeyeddick I came across a few photos that I had forgotten about. We were camped at 6:45 & Kyoto on Sept 3 we were visited by 3 guys (pictured below) who appeared in a camper (also pictured below, on the left side) they wanted to know if we wanted any drugs, we kindly said 'no' and a day later they left. I was wondering if anyone else came across these three guys. We kind of think they were undercover police. It was just kind of strange how they acted and how quickly they disappeared.
