Reno = Yawn. The place just seems kinda ho-hum. A gateway to Tahoe, Black Rock / Slick Rock NCA and more interesting places and nothing more. I've never run into any attitudes, I did have people ask how the burn went especially when they saw the Missouri plates on the truck and trailer. This year when I bought gas on my way up Mt. Rose the guy behind the counter told me to pick up the SF Chronicle as it had a pic of the temple burn on the bottom front page I might want to have. I bought it on the spot too.

When I make my trip to BRC and back and I still have blue or purple hair and am not exactly dressed like the locals I just keep going. Let'em snicker, they have no idea the fun I am getting ready to have or just left. Screw 'em. I do more in one week than most of them do in years. Let' em laugh or comment. It's not a problem anymore.

I've always run across that picture and until PJ's post it stirred a lot of emotions, and the emotions run the full spectrum from disgust to anger to partial understanding, even sympathy...but never funny. PJ's quote lets me see it differently and more importantly in a positive light. That's why I loved the post so much.

as a native miamian, i can relate to how emotionally charged that picture of elian is. i don't like to bash large ethnics groups as a rule ( except the dutch! ) but can i just say what a clusterfuck all those rabid cuban democrats brought upon themselves by that crap? it just killed me when the family made a case for him staying by saying that he would have more advantages living in the us - what a bunch of arrogant fucks. as impoverished as cuba is, they have higher literacy rates than the us does. all you have to do is look at the veritable cornucopia of talented people that were raised on that chunk of rock.

We meandered our way home through Truckee and stopped at a fine place, Dragonfly. We were clean, but with a certain look in all our eyes because the waiter asked if we had just gotten back from a happy place. We smiled and all agreed. He had come home the day earlier. He comped us a lovely appetizer. On the way out, I asked for a copy of the menu and he gave me one in an envelope. In the truck I opened it. He had drawn the Man and wrote by the restaurant name: Burner Friendly!

In my four years of going to playaland™, I've always had good experiences in Reno. Heidi's is great for a burner-friendly breakfast, and the Peppermill Hotel & Casino has always been accepting of my dusty, smelly, post-burn condition.

Every place we stopped in Nevada on the way home (to Phoenix, Arizona) was cool to us.

Reno story: My brother, who is a teeny bit vain (he's allowed, he's a good-looking kid) cultivated his playa hair all week. By the time we left, it was all in magnificent anime-guy spikes. We were stuffing our faces at the Atlantis buffet when one of the waiters, quite spiky of head himself, came up and said "Man, I gotta ask -- how did you get your hair to do that?" Bro said, "Well, to start you gotta spend a week at Burning Man." The waiter was a little mystified, but allowed himself to be explained at. Maybe we'll see him next year.

Getting old is hell, but some use it as an excuse to be rude. I sometimes stay quiet, but if their being a pain I have no problem putting them in their place with a few choice words. I just assess the situation and see if it's worth the effort, some people are so dense that anything you say won't work...so why bother?

Ignoring people also works...deprive them of a reaction and they fall flat on their faces....that can be fun too.

reno is a tough place in many ways but there are many good people here who support the whole thing.i cant think of a more appropriate place to have burning man each year than nevada.burning man is good for reno.just remember as out of towner folks passing back thru reno to whereever you are headed to spread the positive memes about burning man thru your words and actions.

This year was my 2nd burn and we've stopped in Reno on our way home to eat at one of the buffets in the Silver Legacy both years. I haven't gotten any reaction one way or the other to the way I look but I guess I haven't looked too wierd yet, this year I was of course dusty, pissed off, with a cast on my hand from running into a pole on the playa, and wearing boxer shorts and a t-shirt. Although making my way through crowds of tourists at casinos is not my favorite thing to do after I've just spent a week in a tent in the desert, both times the food at the buffet has seemed like the best food I've ever eaten. Although I live only 3 and 1/2 hours from Burning Man I can't seem to wait until I get home to have a hot meal and I am very glad that Reno is on my way.

I always feel a little edgy when travelling in the US. This is usually compounded after leaving BRC when I show up in the gas station in Cedarville (northern route), and slap my Visa down on the counter covered in comics making fun of Hilary Clinton from Hustler. My chipped nail polish never fails to get a snear from the dude behind the counter every single year.

I have had really good luck and nice interactions in Reno for five years. But since I go up early and stay there late, maybe they are just not quite as persnickety as during the peak times.

I think old folks who are cranky are probably no different from young folks who are cranky. Maybe they've just gotten better at it.

I did have one negative thing happen...we got attitude from the folks at a health food store for asking for directions to wally world (yes, I admit it.) I mean, I really would have bought tiki torches from the granolateria if they carried them....but then I wouldn't have found that rad "Ten Commandments" paint-by-numbers, for sure, that kept me entertained on Saturday afternoon prior.

I am probably going to hell. Anyway, I like the folks in Reno.

I walked into some tiny store somewhere near Reno in a yankee's American Civil War Jacket with a sarong tied around the top of my jeans and asked for some nuts or something - this woman's jaw like dropped and when I came out my buddy from NY said 'Did you just go in there dressed like that' - 'Go back in there and apologise to that woman at once" -he was laughing his ass off. I just think those coats are way cool.

This year I cycled around a K Mart at 5am stoned out of my mind on a kids bike looking for my friend and the manager very nicley said "please could you stop doing that, it is a lttle odd"

I still love the look on the face of the shop assistant who I cycled up to and asked if he had any lightsabers in stock at 5am. I think people in the US tolerate more 'freakness' from foreigners perhaps - thus the 'Can't you see that boys from France' quote.

That story very nearly made me piss myself too Badger.
