I only got naked once, on stage, with bouncers standing by.

I enjoy wearing clothes. I prefer to protect my junk with a sarong or chain mail cod piece.

Some Loafers may do a bit of shirtcocking this year, though. A Squire is just a Knight who is too cheap to buy armor.

I have never had much of an issue with nudity but with 4 kids and living in Suburbia I don't get much chance. So this year I got my one and only chance to bare all at the Human Carcass Wash at PolyParadise camp.

As I suspected after a few minutes it was like nothing at all, especially when with a large group of other nekked folks who are acting perfectly natural.

So, if anyone wants to experience BM in the buff, but does not want to do so wandering around the playa I suggest the Carcass Wash at PolyParadise. This year they were at 7:30 & A. Not only can one be nude in a comfortable environment, you also get to wash other naked people. What more could one ask for?

I'm wondering if the same is true for me. I had to miss last year because of a big surgery and now look quite different from when I was last on the playa. So in two years, I have gone from being a somewhat muscular middle-aged guy to a somewhat wasted old man.
My issue isn't modesty (for the most part); it's how to recalibrate my participation appropriately. Each kind of physical presence opens up some performance art possibilities and closes off others. I'm wondering if I have the theatrical skill to make the transition. It's an interesting problem that can't be solved ahead of time--as with so many situations, you can't really know what it's about until you are in the middle of it.

Since this thread was brought back to life, I will comment on this subject.

Burning Man is not a nudie event. You can spend the entire week wearing a 50 gallon drum around you if you wish. This is all free expression and what YOU are comfortable with. If you are feeling old, fat, or just have a fear of being naked in a public setting, this may be the perect place to hit your life long fears head on.

Imagine being in a crowded public place like center camp and not having a stitch of clothing on except shoes (which are very important). Some people carry the fear from the time they are kids and have nightmares of being in front of the school class unprepared for a book report and are naked in their dreams in front of the class.

This is the place to actually try this for real if you wish, and see that there was nothing to fear all these years.

I had a number of major surgeries in 2004. I was always fat from when I first started coming to B-Man, but the knife altered the landscape permanently. I don't often get naked because if the sun and the dust, but I still do now and then. I just don't care what others think anymore. My friends see me, not my scars and the belly slump and dimpled thighs.

Do what you want, don't let a perception that only pretty people can go bare.

Having been to a few nudist resorts, it isn't like only the most beautiful bodies are unveiled, and the less photogenic people are good enough to cover up. It isn't like that.

Everyone's got a body, few of them are perfect, and those people rarely show up. It's a question of dropping our hangups about what people will think and how they judge how our bodies look.

So I'll be covering up, but wearing mirrored sunglasses.

I'm not sure if I am reading the follow-ups to my post correctly, but I was trying to bring in a new angle beyond body acceptance or fear of being nude in a public setting. Both of these themes have gotten some good discussion in this thread, but I was thinking that focusing on participation and how we can gift people with interesting presences would be another aspect worth noticing.

After my first year, which I spent mostly simply naked doing lots of MOOP patrols because it was a way I could readily contribute without knowing too much about the culture of BRC, I have tried to develop some of my performance art characters such that nudity (with accessories) would make some contribution to the interest of the character. Apocalyptic Guy (which I can still do) has been my most-photographed character and The Naked Mailman (which I can also still do) my most gifted. The surgery has destroyed my ability to do any of my nude tai chi permutations, which I hope provided some early-morning atmospherics for the intrepid souls out at that hour in the deep playa. And I don't think I can bring off any of the glittery naked glam characters anymore, unless I rework them into over-the-hill parodies. I find it is hard to parody anything on the playa because inevitably you will meet someone doing just about the same thing utterly without irony. Those were some of the thoughts running through my head.

I have no intention of going naked at burning man. Primarily because I want to eliminate the possibility of a genital sun burn. Secondly I don't want my picture on the internet for future employers.

However, I tend to imagine if I did strip down, I'd be nervous for about 3.5 seconds then be glad I did it. For some reason I like to prove I'm as shameless as I really think I am.

That's a real consideration. It already happened to me on Facebook with my default world name clearly attached. Some friends have registered shock, but I think most of them find it interesting. Luckily I am at a point where it won't appreciably affect my employment possibilities.

Once it got into circulation, I decided that trying to stuff the toothpaste back in the tube would be conspicuously graceless. Seemed best to just go with the flow and take such pleasure as may be had in an edgier default world persona than I would ever have created for myself.

I first got naked in public in the 70's. Went w/ some friends to a clothing-optional beach. None of us had ever been nude in public before. Then, we all sat around too embarrassed to take our clothes off.

There were others there in swimsuits, like we were, and some people were naked. I remember thinking how odd the naked people were, to be naked in public.

As it was getting time to leave, I decided it was just too stupid to have gone to this beach and not get naked, so I did. I was nervous, and headed to the water. Naked body-surfing does feel nice.

Anyway, as I was getting out of the water, a lovely woman, wearing a bikini walked by me. I had been socialized to assume she would scream and call the police. To my surprise, she just smiled nicely, said "hello" and kept walking.

Anyway, the point (finally!) of my story is that I found myself thinking that all the people wearing swimsuits looked silly, with those strips of cloth around what we all knew was underneath. Now that I was naked, I didn't think the naked people looked funny -- just the people in swimsuits.

So, back to the topic of this thread -- if you do decide to get naked, I'll bet you find out very quickly that it feels a lot more comfortable than you'd expected -- as soon as you see that nobody really cares.
