Our First Art Cart Stolen

This was the first time my wife and I attempted an art cart this year. The night of the burn we watched it from our camp and went to bed. In the morning we found that some thief had taken our cart. It had a air brush painting on the frount panel. a surf board and skeleton topped with small pink flamingo's on a home made canopy. Was flying a Welsh flag from the left rear of the canopy, and had a home made snorkel air filter on the right rear of the canopy. We were looking forward to working on this little cart for years to come, now we are just fucking bummed. Instead of enjoying anything Sunday and Monday we spent our time looking for our cart. What a bad end to a great week.

Had you taken any measures to increase the difficulty of theft? "Ignition" lock, or chaining it to your car or truck?

Maybe next time you should build a garage that has a lockable door. or perhaps a vault or a low-jack system....

IFwe ever do a project like this again we will. It was parked next to our truck in camp. Being farmers who live out in the country we don't lock up anything and never even think about things like that. Leason learned, we sure as hell will in the future. What gripes me to is the attatude of the LOE's out on the playa. They seem to worry more about people smoking dope, more then thieves. Hmmmmm just how do you get a stolen cart out of a "closed" event? They can search all of our cars coming in looking for gate crashers, but not even a glance for stolen goods?

I added a hidden kill switch to my scooter to slow down would be thieves. It's not as good as a lock but its better than nothing.

You also might want to consider a self destruct system.

Maybe with a small sticker in really fine print that reads "Theft of this cart could result in serious injury or even death." Sort of like our tickets say.
Hmmmm in my twisted mind I see a little pyro cart, with a key code ignition. And propane nozzles pointed inwards toward the driver. BURNING THIEF. Hmmmm its fun to dream, but I'm not really that sick.

NPR did a report on that thing about a year back. What was so cool about it that the article just can't convey is just how sinister that contraption sounds when it's being ignited. It's stop the hearts of half the car jacking idiots in Capetown just from the noise. The other half would get their just deserts as well though. Six foot flames from under the frame of your car at a stop light.

Yea, my art-car came up missing after it broke down out toward the Man one morning (2003). I spent 2 days semi-looking for it until low-and-behold, it turned up on the "other" side of a bus that must have pulled up next to mine and broke down itself. Since the bus wasn't there when I broke down, I assumed incorrectly that my art-car wasn't parked there (since my transmission blew up out in nowheresland, with nothing for 100 yards or so around it).

Had it towed back and promptly destroyed it myself.
