There is now a strong fucking possiblity I have no pictures of our art piece out in the context it was created for.

Not necessarily. Water won't damage the latent images on undeveloped film. Certain chemicals which may or may not be present in your detergent and fabric softener might.

Take the camera in and get the film developed anyway and see what comes back.
