After wrestling Ygmir's "Octopus jumper cables of death" (trained and contained now) and not being able to keep the front tire on the ground with 6 bags of ice on the back, I found a way to get 80 pounds redistibuted to the front wheel which only had about 10 pounds on it before.

With the new option, it is now the "Swiss Army Kamikaze Ashtray" or SAKA for short!

100% more chance of explosion, sparks, and bodily injury!!!

Get to warn/threaten people (depending on my mood).... "GET OUT OF THE WAY SAKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

More space for "junk in my trunk" and no more wheely hazard!

yes bare polished steel. boot topping is the equivalent of baseboard molding, maybe extending 6 - 12 " onto the bare polished steel

I'm finally getting the chance to tinker around some more with design ideas for the ziggurat facade (the centerpiece of Eridu Society's installation). I did a bunch of early sketch work and rough draft stuff last fall so I could have some broad strokes stuff to share with campmates and put on the site, now it's time to get a bit more serious about how I want to design and build it.

The first pic shows my latest model of the shell in C4D, and then the second pic shows work on designing some of the components in VCarve.





Next I plan to take the component designs and make 3D models of all the parts and dial up something a bit more detailed, which will give me a better sense of the construction as well as all the materials I'll need and parts I'll need to make. From there I'll work on a scale model, and then a partial build of a few components for testing.

started on the mill:
changed fuel, oil, let the cylinder soak in ATF for a few days, hit the starter and it worked!!
ran pretty rough, so did an "on the block" carb rebuild, and now it's pretty smooth (for a 1 cyl. 18 h.p. engine).

gotta replace some rubber bands for tracking that wicked looking blade, and I'll be ready for test cutting.

I have a black oak log, 36" dia 26' long, just waiting.
we took out two cedars here, 48" dia and 72" dia.
this will only cut 26" wide and 16" thick at a time.
just split them with a chainsaw, I happen to have one. also for making furniture.

yeah E.D. I've got a Stihl 062 with a 40" that I used to make the Hof furniture at that last party.
Chainsaw mills are great, sure handy, but production can be pretty slow, and for cutting 3/4 panelling, you'c turn as much into sawdust and you made into boards.

My "man" is getting there..still aways to go, with finishing the head, and cleaning up some rough spots, and adding the lighting. It's like my art, maaan...

The pic is crappy, and it's kind of hard to tell, but he's all bamboo...shocker, huh?

Thanks for the kind words, Yggy, this has been one heckuva learning process so far. After the last couple years of doing art projects that involve CNC I felt like I had kind of learned some chops and amassed some skillz, but this whole slotted wood thing is kicking my ass. It probably doesn't help that I don't have a workshop, shed, or barn that I can tinker around with so doing this takes me completely out of my element. If I had my 'druthers, I'd get a bunch of lumber and put it in a pile, then make a couple pieces and fiddle with it using power and hand tools… then maybe try again with what I learned from that, repeating as necessary til I get it right.

Designing and testing virtually reminds me of trying to dial in the chevrons on that old movie/show Stargate. Get one figured out and then move on to the next one… oh too bad that doesn't work. Try a different set of values until you get the second one going, and then repeat the struggle for the next piece. Sometimes you realize that combo just isn't going to get you where you want to go, and you need to re-work each piece all over again. I'm up to 7 parts out of 11 or 12 that I'll probably need to design. Once I get through this pass I'll do a couple test builds and models, then re-work the design one more time in prep for making the parts for the full scale piece. As tedious and as challenging as it is, I'm loving it.

There isn't really any programming involved, Yggy. The way 3D printers (and a lot of the computer controlled stuff) works is that you load up your design in whatever software that tool uses, and then more or less print. Different tools use different image/object file formats and have their own specific stuff, but to me that's just kind of tinkering and tweaking. Kind of like how you'd tinker and tweak with settings when switching between different welders and torches and whatnot.

Making the design happens in whatever software tool you have and want to use. That stuff ranges from free or cheap to really expensive, and a lot of the programs are fairly intuitive. I'm probably not one to say how easy stuff is, Pandorra and I have each been doing digital design work for more than 25 years, something I might be familiar with because it's similar to other things I've used might be really strange and unusual to someone who's not familiar with it. And then the opposite…sometimes it takes me a while to wrap my head around stuff.

Google Sketchup is a good place to start playing around with 3D things. It's like playing with blocks, you push a button and make basic shapes, then squash and stretch and all that to get what you want. Autodesk (who makes super high end stuff that cost more than our van haha) has a bunch of free tools from their 123D apps division (for macs and pcs and that let you do some awesome and cool stuff. You can 'print' from those things directly to a 3D printer if you've got one, or 'print' to an online service that will do the 3D printing onto one of their high-tech machines in the material of your choice. Let me dig around and find a pic or two of some stuff we've done through a 3D printing service and post 'em here.

Here we go. First one is a bunch of buttons and a medal design, we're toying with the idea of replacing the hand-cast buttons on my pirate coat with something next generation (as well as using them on an airship pilot/pirate coat design we've been toying with)…



This next one is pretty awesome. Both because it's just a fun design, and because Pandorra did it from the ground-up in one of the little 123d app on her iPad. No big spendy software was used to make it.



This is another piece I really like. We've been toying around with this art concept for 4-5 years now called 'orchidtecture.' Sort of steampunk architecture meets organic things, it was concocted as part of a virtual art installation we made in Second Life years back. Anyways, that's been bouncing around since, and she's fooled around with orchid designs for clothing and 3D design projects over the years. When she got her tophat last year, she took one of the existing designs she had and had it 3D printed in metal to add as a decoration.



And then finally is another thing that we're still tinkering around with… an iPhone case with our camp symbol and some hotrod style flames. The version pictured almost worked (the placement of a couple of the cutouts was off by a few mm), both of us got sidetracked by other things but we'll probably get around to finishing it up in the next few weeks.



All those are some fun works in progress, and will hopefully make it to the playa with us in one form or another.
