Is it raining in Black Rock?

Wowzer I just looked at radar in that area and it shows storms that are almost over brc! It's hard to tell on wunderground's Map and won't load animation so not even sure which it's headed.
Somebody hop on the Hamm radio and give em shout aye?

On the bright side...If it rains enough, Burning Man will be longer than a week.

Yes it is raining. Heard reports a wee bit ago from DPW & Gate. Although, it was raining during a dust storm when I got the email....

Does rain make any difference? Say 1/4" fell...it's not going to pack down the playa much because there is already a crust on top of powder, correct? The conditions last year were because there was standing water....

That is exactly right. All it does is cut the dust until it dries though.

The only difference I can imagine, is that the roads may be bumpier if DPW is working through th mud. They may be so busy, they don't have time to wait for it to dry. It's still gonna be dusty as fuck though

Depends on how much rain. If it is like opening day in 2011, then, yah - the city is shut down. Otherwise, they just stop driving for a bit. . .

It doesn't take that much water to create ruts. The tiniest bit turns the playa dust into cement...picked up and deposited by tires..or feet. This is why WE DON'T CHASE THE WATER TRUCKS ANYMORE..Right?

But, how are frat boy/girls going to get their drinking water, if they don't chase the water trucks?? We know that the hippies avoid them anyhow....

Rain today isn't really so much of a problem (unless you're out there and it's heavy, of course). It becomes problematic if it's part of a pattern that would indicate an early start to the rainy season, which could mean a torrential downpour during the event… it's happened.

So far, first rain I have heard of since before the golden spike was placed.

I'll keep posting updates from my Gate & DPW peeps till I hit the playa. The unusual thing today was rain and a dust storm at the same time ;)

2010 was the year it rained on opening Monday. It really appeared to me, after the stuff had dried, that the cars driving on it actually compacted the dust and made it solid. The streets were really nice to ride bikes on that year.

Reports from on playa folks (coming from two different sources) that there were winds in the 50-70mph range, and rain that was heavy at times.

They sucked on our side (I can't remember if we were 4:00 or 4:30 that year) - we had to walk our bikes out of camp past the huge dunes before we could even get on them, and there was a 10' or 15' gap between the Esplanade & the beginning of the bar because of thick dunes. It only got worse as the week went on - the little rainstorm didn't really do anything past the first day other than give us some really beautiful skies.

Glad this sparked such a nice discussion. Of course in my dreams it would rain enough to flatten and smooth everything out and then dry nice and hard and solid. (who doesn't want a smooth, hard solid one?)

But more realistically I'm hoping for heat, dust, ruts, whiteouts and sporadic thunderstorms. I hope my expectations can be met!

The real (and ongoing) discussion about what the playa conditions may be like this year is over here, if you care to join it.

Personally I'm hoping for a dry dusty apocalypse.

I just had that report refuted by a different source.

The campaign of confusion is working quite well.
