Mars, You Say?

Postby trilobyte » Wed Aug 08, 2012 6:20 pm

The folks at io9 count Black Rock City as one of the six earth cities that will provide blueprints for martian settlers. But of course! Why wouldn't they?

io9 wrote:Up top, you can see what Black Rock City, home to Burning Man, would look like in a Martian crater. Why this city? Erected swiftly every year in the barren playa of Black Rock Desert in Nevada, the city is like a beta test for instant colonies erected in harsh alien climates. People use vehicles and temporary buildings to shield themselves from extreme temperatures and sandstorms. Would it work on Mars? If the buildings could provide atmosphere, yes. A Martian colony will need fast, temporary housing and will also need to be profoundly careful with the ecosystem on the planet. So the Burning Man credo of "leave no trace," meaning leave no trash or non-environmentally appropriate items, will become the credo of Mars too.

Maybe, I'll read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy again...

Naw, it must be ME who is drunk, because it looks like 2:00 Street and the entire neighborhood down to 2:30 Street is missing. What caught my eye was that the 3:00 Keyhole seems to be at 2:30. Then I counted streets. Bartender, no more for me!

The best part about with this new location, compared to Black Rock, is that they're figuring it will speed up the exit.

Given the travel time, return time and the wait....for the optimum departing times...it wouldn't be much of a TAZ. Not that I'm AGAINST it!

No population cap, but Exodus will take more than a year…

I suspect a slight modification to the commerce policy, no Arctica, but instead Air camp ;)

Dude, you've seen enough sci-fi movies to know, this is the kind of thing no one seems to notice now, but is gonna have serious implications down the line.

Oooo, yes! I'm beginning on a sci-fi movie manuscript right away!: Every time something is transported to Mars, 1/16 of it disappears. Nobody has a clue. Then it turns out the little green Marsians are collecting it as import tax. But finally they give us 2:00 Street back, because a certain loud camp generates too much moop. Hollywood here I come!
