Sweetpea and I had a very long and critically important talk today. I was terrified when I began. By the end I was dumbstruck with the woman who is my wife. The woman that I never knew she was and is. The woman of my dreams.
We are now more deeply in love than at any point in the past.

I wrote some thoughts out that helped me come to a number of realizations much sooner than I thought and that hepled me make my mind up that it was indeed the right time to have that talk.

Sweetpea has once again amazed me with the depths of her knowledge. After 18 years of faithful companionship, we are now beginning a new chapter. She has been ahead of me for so many years but had decided that unless I owned myself then her input could only confuse me and lead me on a path that would not have been my own. Long ago she had known where and who I was. Her approach was absolutely correct and I love her dearly for her handling of it. She'd figured things out even before we were married to one another 14 years ago.

She has encouraged me to begin independently of her. She does not want to litter my path with her own biases, unintended though they would be, because it is my path, not hers. Her willingness to go hands-off, her strong belief that trust is key, is something that I never would have imagined.

Scary? Sure. Intimidating? Of course. Exciting? Absolutely.

Nobody ever said that it would be easy. But, with full permission and support, I feel that this is something that I can do. The first step was in recognizing myself. The next is in discovering what it is that I truly need. I have a whole new understanding of unique relationships. That the original deep and abiding love is not threatened and only grows stronger with trust. Her hearing it straight from me that she is, first and foremost, what I do not ever want to lose, I would like to think influenced her decision. In reality, it comes from her incredible store of inner strength. She is very secure in knowing her true position in my priorities independently of my assertions.

She’s told me that what she desperately wants is for me to find what I need to feel like myself.
That all she ever wants is for me to feel happy and love myself.
Whatever that might be.
With Sweetpea at my side and having my back, things are changing for the better.
I stand amazed.
