NEW EPLAYA AND UPGRADES COMING

Postby mdmf007 » Thu Jun 02, 2011 6:15 pm

Per Will, here is the information for our little online community and upgrades.

MDMF

On June 20th at 7:00pm PST, the ePlaya will be taken down for an important server and software upgrade. The whole process is expected to take about 24 hours, and once it's all said and done, we'll be unveiling a faster, better ePlaya!

If you're interested in helping to beta test the new version (which would be awesome!), please email eplaya@burningman.com."

I hope the new pair of shoes is a comfy as the old pair of shoes. I will be a big boy about this and embrace the new software without kicking, screaming or crying!

Kudos to the eplaya team for making it happen.
I hope it's as easy to use as this board without a lot of fluff...
This place could really be an asset to the BM Community and I hope it finally reaches it's potential.

I also hope the mods use the opportunity to implement some of the things they've wanted for a while...

In any case I look forward to seeing the changes!

I like the E-playa. But, I certainly won't complain if "search" was a tiny bit more selective. Can "plonk" be made permanent? Once somebody plonks a person, it can't be "undone"? 8)
I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.

Of course the post count thing will be a bit different. To offset newbies and make them feel more at home, they will start out with a positive count of 2300 - an arbitrary number chosen basically from random.

For each post they post it goes up by one, unless it is a "liked" post then it goes up by two. Did I mention that there will be a "like" button? If the "Unlike" button that will actually read "Blows" then they will lose 3 points, so it pays to have a good post. A benign post or one that does not get ether "like" or "Blows" clicked on will only get 1.

In addition the post count will reduce for everyone by one post per thousand they have per day i.e. if I have 4000 posts, its because I write more, but Say fishy has 20000 posts because she is a prolific writer - she would have to write 20 posts a day, or have 20 total likes, and post counted to just maintain a level of 20,000. A rookie with only 2000 posts would only need 2 posts a day to stay flat.

I hope this clears up the post count issue,

I got the email too, but my version didn't have the time selected yet.

And then I checked my email after browsing eplaya. Ah, priorities.

According to the reason given above, Your mail was refused because your email address does not have an SPF record or the record is incorrect in some way. You need to contact your email provider about that problem. Meanwhile, I'd just send again using a different email account.

You can Google SPF for additional information on SPF records, which are becoming more and more necessary to avoid spam filters these days.

And we are back to my "culling." I don't know how we could do it, but tossing everything and keeping everything each seem unsatisfactory to me...

I don't know how to preserve an entire thread with authors and everything (screenshots? something else? hrm . . . sounds like it takes up a lot of space) but I definitely have some favorite pieces of advice I like to link to. I think I'll make it a goal to copy at least the text of 10 (attributed) pieces before June 20.

Why do I have this increasing feeling of dread about this upgrade? Despite the best of intentions and promises that they would preserve the old stuff we lost the first version of the eplaya many years back...and if the Vegas Sportsbooks would allow such a bet I'd put $20 down on the same thing happening again.

In short the track record for these sorts of things redefines the word "sketchy". Now I know...there's a brand new IT team, yadda yadda yadda, but I hope they really put a lot of thought into how to pull this off.

Meanwhile I'll be screenshotting the school bus thread and a couple of invaluable resources....just in case.
