Electro-Fags and LEOs on da Playa

Hey Kids,

This will be my first year at the Burn vaping e-fags AKA e-cigs instead of smoking "analog" cigs. The only potential drawback I fear is the possibility that LEOs won't know what they are and will assume they are weed/drug devices of some sort and proceed to do an illegal search. Dripping e-juice into the device to refill looks particularly sinister to the uninitiated, I must admit. Anywho, since I won't have anything illegal on me I don't really fear the search results, but I am not looking forward to the uncomfortable situation that would develop when I loudly protest the illegal search, before telling them to fuck off and photographing them/their badge #s when they don't find anything illegal. It's just an ugly scene I'd rather avoid, but I am not willing to go back to smoking for my nicotine fix just because LEOs on the playa might be ignorant of the technology.

My hope is that many of the LEOs at BM are from Reno (where I assume there is a whole-lotta indoor vaping going on at Casinos) and won't bat an eye. Wishful thinking? Is there anyone out there who has used e-cigs on the playa and had to deal with uninformed LEOs?

Mosin- the LEO's aren't stupid, regardless of what you think. Let me put this simply- if it looks illegal, and they see it, they are fully within their rights to investigate to make sure it's not. You might get lucky by being polite & they figure out it's just a tobacco product, your fine- that one time.

The next officer who sees you may not be so nice, and if you show the same attitude in person towards the LEO's as you post here, I can guarantee you that they will work under the assumption you're doing something illegal until proven otherwise.

You are basically asking to create problems for yourself for the entire week. And, since they can investigate your camp if they think illegal substances are there, you're asking to create trouble for your camp.

It's not a tobacco product, which is the whole point. If the LEOs aren't stupid/uninformed as you say, I should have no problem vaping on the playa. I'll hope for that. If they are uninformed, I might have to undergo an illegal search or three... which will suck for everyone involved (they won't find anything illegal and will meanwhile get to enjoy my fully legal verbal thrashing) but isn't a good enough reason for me to go back to analog cigs. I guess I'll be the educational guinea pig this year and hope it isn't a problem in future years to come!

Simple solution - find an informative article explaining whatever it is you are doing, print a couple copies for the off chance that you are stopped. This way you can be polite and informative at the same time.

I do that with Geocaching. Saves a lot of trouble explaining what I'm doing that doesn't look like I should be doing.

BTW there is another acronym that you should be aware of - ADT - Attitude Determines Ticket.

Geospyder is right- "verbally thrashing" the LEO's is just asking to get yourself screwed. You're not the only playa lawyer they're dealing with, and they would rather keep things smooth than deal with drama. You start thrashing however...... not the way to come out of the encounter the way you want.

If you're nice about the encounters and actually try to educate why what you're doing isn't illegal you'll probably get much farther. It's not like you don't expect to get investigated- you are the one that started this thread.

Again- it's your Burn. Do with it as you will. Personally, I just want to see how long you stay on playa after getting a reputation amongst the LEO's for your "verbal thrashing's"

That is a great idea! Thanks. I actually have some business cards from e-cig suppliers that have short explanations of what they are on the back (intended primarily for bartenders) so I'll pack several of them and a few articles, and try to be as cordial as possible. Since many LEOs smoke, maybe I'll even win over a few converts!

Eric, I appreciate the truly sage advise, but I think I didn't explain myself well because I really don't have an anti-LEO attitude, nor would I enjoy having to get into it verbally with LEOs (or establish a bad rep with them). I guess I was just anticipating my anger should a LEO inquire about my e-cigs, receive a cordial explanation/demonstration, and then proceed to search me illegally anyway. (You might remember a few years ago a Burner got illegally searched for rolling up a Drum cig). At the very least I will cordially chide them while conducting their illegal search, and try to obtain or photograph their badge #s, because being a Burner does not mean one has to forfeit all of their rights as an American (!). With that said, I don't go to the Burn to make futile political statements to LEOs, so hopefully the previous suggestion to carry some e-fag documentation will help stave off a negative scene.

Leo's aren't bad folks, with a very few exceptions I can think of, just government employees, doing a job they were hired to do. They didn't make up the rules(for the most part), your congress person did. Blame them if you can't smoke dope, not the LEO. It's known as "discretionary enforcement of the law". LEO's have prerogatives to enforce,,,, or not,,,,, mostly depending upon the situation at hand. If the "subject" causes a source of irritation, the LEO's prerogative will probably be irritating to that source.
